Job Description

Leading and Managing the Occupational Health, Safety and Environment programs, including the development, implementation and maintenance of the systems. Ensures compliance with accepted safety and environmental standards and applicable legislation. Design, plan or perform duties in the prevention, control and remediation of health, safety and environmental hazards. General maintenance of the Accounts Payable system and General ledger

Skills and Qualifications

University Degree or College Diploma, preferably in safety and or environmental studies

Sound knowledge of Ontario safety, environmental regulations, codes, legislative requirements relating to OSHA, CSA, WSIA, and the NIOSH

Minimum 5 years working experience in manufacturing environment in a safety leadership capacity

Demonstrated leadership and problem solving abilities

Strong communication skills both written, oral

Excellent interpersonal and employee relations skills

Familiar with IATF16949 and ISO 14001 standards

WSIB claims management experience

Extensive knowledge of safety principles and practices

Understanding of the principles and application of ergonomics

Able to perform physical demands analysis on various workstations

Perform worksite assessments

Proficient in Microsoft Office

Experience in adult education and presentation/training skills

Ability to work in a team environment and individually

The duties and responsibilities of the HSE Lead are detailed below, but not limited to the following:

Health, Safety and Environmental:



Visible on plant floor on all shifts in all departments

Monitor and advise on plant safety as to working conditions and practices with respect to safe operations and the control of designated substances

Act as resource person in developing a safe and health work environment.

Ensure all new equipment has met the PHSR requirement; responsible to maintain all PHSR documents. Assist the manufacturing and engineering teams with the approval of new equipment and process design and ensure pre-starts are in place and completed.

Liaise with engineering and maintenance to ensure safety and ergonomic compliance and improvement on all new and existing equipment.

Responsible to co-chair JHSC meetings, maintain minutes and complete action plans. Ensure all open issues are closed as soon as possible. Consistently follow up on open issues.

Initiate and review all accidents/incidents and near misses. Ensure that proper preventative measures are in place. Provides recommendations and follow up as required and provide leadership in corrective action.

Develop/coordinate site specific training programs where necessary.

Provide direction for occupational hygiene, concerns and hazards material management.

Monitor new and revised legislation and remain current with the latest safety requirements and documents and educates all employees accordingly.

Advise and promote conformance with all relevant legislation and makes recommendations.

Observe standards for safe working conditions as outlined in the Occupational Health and safety Act as well as rules and regulations outlined in the employee handbook

Implement HSE programs policies and standards used by employees, supervisors, and managers in accordance with legislative and corporate guidelines.

Ensure availability and relevance of HSE programs and ensure that all plant personnel are properly trained in HSE programs, policy and procedures.

Conduct safety orientation and training as outlined under the appropriate acts and or handbook.

Investigate plant to provide advice, make recommendations and drive improvements to ensure at minimum conformance with legal and corporate requirements.

Maintain and analyse monthly accident statistics

Accurate monthly documentation of frequency, severity and lost time data

Effective claim management of WSIB through timely submission of WSIB Form 7, applications for SIEF, addressing SIEF objections and follow-up.

Facilitate timely return to work from WSIB. Liaison with employees and physicians to keep abreast of "fit to return" dates to regular or modified duties.

Assist and Coordinate Return/Modified Work Program related to non-occupational illness/injury with Human Resources.

Provide meaningful statistics to management in a timely manner to assist in continued improvement of workplace, health, safety, environment and loss control.

Maintain all ergonomic assessment information and works with the engineering and manufacturing departments to ensure ergonomic assessments and action items are in place.

Maintain all Physical Demands analysis and hazard assessments.

Conduct HSE training and awareness meetings and coordinates training from outside sources.

Survey the effectiveness of HSE programs in place to ensure that programs are able to meet target HSE objectives through the annual Health & Safety and Environmental audits.

Liaison with corporate Health and Safety department for communications and audits and ensures action plan is developed in response to annual safety audits.

Responsible for the Workwell Audit; Environmental Audit and Health & Safety Audit.

Ensure Health & Safety communication board is updated.

Monitor the Material Safety Data Sheets and ensures they are updated

Schedules annual Fire Drills; Hearing Tests.

Manages the prescription safety eyeglass program.

Manages and schedules the safety shoe truck program

Ensures PPE is available to all employees, visitors and contractors

Responsible for the Heat Stress Program. Ensures all cooling aids are available for employees. Monitors the temperature within the plant and recommends additional breaks.

Ensures WHMIS compliance.

Maintains all environmental regulations and laws applicable for the province of Ontario and Canada

Develops and implements corrective action plans resulting audits or from the Ministry of

Environment's inspections/audits.

Coordinates noise measurements and audits

Maintains the spill response plan, evacuation and emergency response plans

Fulfills customer demands for control of restricted materials

Implement and maintain ISO14001 including training, education and system maintenance.

Coordinate ISO 14001 audits both internally and externally.

Ensure all Design for Environments are completed.

Maintain the ISO 14001 management system

Assist in the preparation of minutes for various Environmental and HSE meetings.

Schedule all annual hygiene testing as required.

Maintain Material Safety Data Sheets systems, and Contractor Database system.

Maintain Environmental audit action plans.

Provide IMDS support to Engineering and Quality

Coordinate all annually required testing and monitoring such as our storm, sanitary, waste generators and environmental compliance approvals (ESDM, NPRI, AAR).

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $80,000.00-$100,000.00 per year
