Job Description

The Housing Navigator is responsible for supporting YW Crisis Shelter residents in securing long term, stable and safe housing. This involves assisting with housing searches, applications, viewing appointments, and making referrals for housing supports. In working side-by-side with residents and using a strengths-based, trauma informed lens, this role helps them women and children safely transition from the shelter. The Housing Navigator will also work with various community partners to develop relationships within the public and private housing sectors and will support the larger Shelter team with housing related knowledge and resources.


This is a full-time position typically working Monday to Friday, 4 day time shifts per week: 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., 1 evening shift per week, and one Saturday per month. This position is located on site at the YW Crisis Shelter and may require some travel.

WHAT YOU'LL DO




Housing Navigation and Support Services:




Assist shelter residents and their children in finding safe, affordable, and appropriate housing. Provide participants with listings of potential housing options in alignment with their needs and support them in their housing search, viewing appointments, housing applications, submitting necessary documentation, and negotiating with potential landlords. Coach residents on engaging with property owners, help ensure understanding of tenant rights and support with other housing related skills and knowledge. Help residents navigate challenges that may impact housing eligibility and advocate on their behalf to expedite access to housing. Assist residents with moving options, acquiring furniture and meeting other basic needs. Makes referrals to housing supports and the Outreach program for residents who may need assistance past shelter stay. Maintain expertise in available affordable housing options and housing subsidies. Conduct research and community outreach activities to expand access to housing by cultivating relationships with property owners and management companies.

Administration:




Maintain complete and accurate documentation and reports in accordance with program and organizational standards and requirements. Assist team with data collection and record keeping as requested. Maintain and update informational material and ensures residents receive regular communications.

WHAT YOU'LL BRING




Post secondary education in social work, human services or related field. Minimum of two years' experience in a related role. Experience in domestic violence services and the housing sector is an asset. Knowledge of the "Housing First" philosophy and housing models, landlord-tenant relationship management principles and practices and related legislation (i.e. Innkeepers Act, Residential Tenancy Act, Housing Services Act, Landlord Tenant Board, Privacy) Knowledge of social and community agencies and resources for referrals. Strong understanding of issues specific to women experiencing homelessness, poverty, domestic violence, trauma, addictions, and mental health. Experience working with diverse, vulnerable and marginalized populations. Demonstrated ability to adapt to changing situations and make thoughtful decisions under pressure, using approaches that are trauma informed and culturally relevant. Communicates effectively in a way that is respectful and clear; works well with others and maintains boundaries and professionalism. Collaborates with team and others to implement innovative solutions to challenges; resolves conflict and solves problems constructively. Demonstrated ability prioritize and organize work to meet tight deadlines. Proficient in Microsoft office and comfortable using data systems and reporting tools. Valid Standard First Aid and CPR Level C Certification. Candidates who do not currently hold this certification must obtain it on their own time, at their own expense within three (3) months of hire.
