Position Overview

The Kluane Lake Research Station in the Arctic Institute of North America is currently seeking a Full-time Temporary (Short Term) Housekeeper for approximately 5 months.

Reporting to the Kluane Lake Research Stations Operations Manager the Housekeeper provides superior guest service and ensures the cleanliness and operation of all aspects of the Kluane Lake Research Station (KLRS). The field station is a large site with numerous buildings (20) and various accommodation types with 50 beds. The housekeeper is responsible for turnover of accommodation areas including sorting, washing, and placement of linen; cleaning of washrooms/showers and lounge spaces. Additionally, this position carries out general building janitorial duties such as mopping floors, washroom cleaning, organizing classroom spaces, and general repairs.

The Housekeeper will provide outstanding service to all guests, students, visitors, and staff by ensuring a high standard of cleanliness is maintained within all areas of the KLRS, and that buildings are kept in good repair. Attention to detail is required to keep up a high level of guest satisfaction. The incumbent is responsible for presenting all areas of all the buildings according to departmental standards and reporting significant issues to keep all spaces in proper working order.

The Arctic Institute is home to the Kluane Lake Research Station (KLRS) which is located 220 km northwest of Whitehorse, Yukon, on the south shore of Kluane Lake, on the traditional lands of the Kluane, Champagne-Ashihik and White River First Nations.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Follow best practices in cleaning and customer service to KLRS Guests, students and other employees of the KLRS
  • Provide the first line of guest service through cleanliness, amenities and ability to respond to guest requests and inquiries
  • Develop or initiate changes to housekeeping procedures
  • Ensure all MSDS sheets are up to date
  • Ensures cleaning supplies are stocked and communicates ordering needs to Operations Manager
  • Understand and follow all policies and procedures of the University of Calgary
  • Ensure particular attention to detail, and the highest standards for overall cleanliness are maintained
  • Comply with all accident/loss prevention programs and Health and Safety practices
  • Relay messages and respond appropriately to Guest inquiries in person, over radio, text, email, or through written notes.
  • Follow cleaning Standard Operating Procedures, to ensure consistency is maintained in all areas
  • Minimize safety hazards by following all safety rules and procedures
  • Perform full range of cleaning/janitorial duties for roles including guest rooms, laundry handling, house areas, public spaces and student spaces
  • Perform full range of cleaning duties for all rooms, including washrooms, hallways, stairwells, and building entrances along with disposal of garbage and recycling
  • Assist with kitchen cleaning duties, including washing dishes, when required
  • Listen effectively, communicate with staff and guests, while maintaining a professional demeanor during stressful situations
  • Identify maintenance requirements and submits maintenance request slips as required
  • Collect and report any lost and found items, following Standard Operating Procedure
  • Perform deep cleaning tasks within assigned areas
  • Maintain efficient and effective use of cleaning tools and resources
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • High School graduation diploma or equivalent work experience
  • Demonstrated professionalism, patience, flexibility, service etiquette skills as well as verbal and written communication skills. Previous experience in the Hotel & Tourism industry or in cleaning/housekeeping is an asset
  • The incumbent must be self-motivated, demonstrate initiative, be a team player, and work independently
  • Must be proactive and standards oriented with a meticulous eye for detail. Highly organized, and able to prioritize tasks while ensuring the highest level of productivity is maintained
  • Must be able to read, write and follow oral and written instructions in English
  • Understanding of and experience with cleaning products and machinery
  • Able to handle stress in a fast-paced work environment
  • Able to prioritize multiple tasks, have a sense of urgency to complete projects and be detail oriented
  • Ability to work without direct supervision
  • Able to effect simple repairs using basic tools
  • Willing to help out in the kitchen with assigned tasks (simple food preparation, washing dishes, etc.)
  • Must be self-directed and highly independent
  • Flexible to work weekdays, weekends and statutory holidays
  • Able to lift, pull, push, grasp and bend while lifting up to 50lbs
