Reporting to the Chief Engineer, the Engineering Assistant Manager assists in leading the Engineering team, overseeing the daily maintenance and long-term strategy of the building assets. This dynamic position requires a hands-on approach and is responsible for the day-to-day success of the Engineering department, working with the Engineering Supervisor on the daily and weekly objectives. They provide both preventive and reactive maintenance and repairs to obtain optimum efficiency of hotel operations including working with contractors and internal resources for each project: leading the team & contractors, assisting with budgetary adherence, asset protection, etc. They will be responsible for inventory control and will work with the Chief Engineer on ordering.
Core Responsibilities
Strategic & Financial Leadership
Deliver the Nita Lake Lodge brand and operation standards.
Responsible for the day-to-day and week-to-week running of the operation, encouraging the supervisors to follow suit and assists the Chief Engineer with longer term priorities.
Adhere to departmental budgets and follow energy conservation programs to minimise expenses.
Maximize Engineering team's potential with a balanced focus on operations, guests, employee and owners' satisfaction.
Weekly reporting to the Chief Engineer.
Building / Physical Asset Management
Augment the physical appearance and operational efficiency of the hotel including physical and safety, mechanical, electrical, plumbing etc.
Utilize building plans to determine locations of sprinkler lines, shutoff valves, water distribution etc. to best manage the operations.
Installation & maintenance of all equipment related to HVAC, DG Sets, water treatment, fire safety etc.
Ensure minimal outages of guest amenities and works with the Chief Engineer on PM protocols required.
Responsible for monitoring and implementing staff housing repairs and maintenance.
Implement a PM program for staff housing, with guidance from HR and the Chief Engineer.
Establish and maintain department equipment and supply inventory levels appropriate to property requirements - report inventory levels on a monthly basis.
Health & Safety
Tends to issues raised by the Health & Safety Committee collaboratively with the Chief Engineer.
Ensure property, grounds, physical plant and work areas are maintained to standard and that all safety equipment and conditions are to code.
Take responsibility for the cleanliness and safety aspects of all plant and mechanical equipment rooms.
Documents all workplace related injuries and reports them in a timely manner to Chief Engineer as well as the Human Resources Manager.
People Leadership
Assist with the recruitment and hiring of engineering/maintenance associates.
Ensure stable running of the team at all times, including training supervisors to uphold this standard.
Train, prioritize, plan, schedule, delegate and coach the engineering department staff to oversee the maintenance, monitoring and testing of the Lodge's emergency and security systems, features like Fire Alarm, CCTV, etc.
Responsible, in conjunction with the Supervisor all people management tasks including, but not limited to, payroll, associate action forms, approving / rejecting vacation requests, etc.
Train engineering department staff on correct maintenance procedures and assists in repairs as needed. Assist in compiling training programs.
Implement the spot check program to assist with maintaining standards.
Strong and effective communication with all departments specifically Housekeeping and Front Office.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Strong leadership experience and skills to inspire a diverse and bright team of Engineering Associates.
Perform frequent standing, bending, twisting, crawling, kneeling, squatting, climbing, reaching, grasping and heavy lifting.
WHMIS certificate or higher level of hazardous material handling training.
Minimum of 5 years' maintenance / building engineer experience preferred with 3+ years in a leadership capacity.
Strong written & verbal communication.
Ability to prioritize and work within constraints while delivering superior service to all internal and external stakeholders.
