Position:



Walpole Island First Nation is seeking a dedicated, compassionate, and culturally responsive Elementary School Homeroom Teacher to join our vibrant school community. This role involves teaching a multi-subject curriculum to a single grade-level class, fostering a safe and inclusive environment, and supporting students in both their academic and personal development. The ideal candidate will deliver instruction in accordance with the Ontario Curriculum while incorporating Indigenous knowledge, perspectives, and values.

Requirements:



Teacher Essential Qualifications



Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) from an accredited institution. Valid Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) certification in good standing. Primary/Junior teaching qualifications (Additional Intermediate qualifications are an asset). Knowledge of or willingness to learn about Anishinaabe culture, traditions, and language. Strong classroom management skills and a nurturing teaching style. Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills. Experience working in First Nation communities or with Indigenous students is considered an asset. A current Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening is required.

Preferred Qualifications:



Experience working with First Nations and/or the Walpole Island First Nation community. At least 2 years of teaching experience. Special Education or Reading Specialist qualifications. Experience in trauma-informed and culturally responsive teaching. Familiarity with land-based learning and outdoor education.

Responsibilities:



Deliver daily lessons in literacy, numeracy, science, social studies, and other core subjects as required by the Ontario Curriculum. Develop and implement lesson plans that are inclusive, engaging, and reflective of the unique cultural heritage of Walpole Island First Nation. Create a welcoming, respectful, and safe classroom environment for all students. Monitor, assess, and evaluate student progress using a variety of assessment tools and strategies. Collaborate with school staff, support personnel, and families to ensure students' academic and social-emotional success. Integrate Indigenous perspectives, history, and culture into teaching practices in meaningful and respectful ways. Participate in ongoing professional development and school-based initiatives. Maintain open communication with parents/guardians through regular updates, meetings, and student-led conferences. Support school-wide activities, cultural events, and community engagement opportunities. Incorporate land-based learning and outdoor education opportunities to connect students with the natural environment and traditional knowledge. Utilize differentiated instruction to meet the diverse learning needs and styles of students. Support students with Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and collaborate with special education staff to ensure accommodations and modifications are implemented effectively. Foster student leadership and responsibility through classroom roles, peer mentoring, and collaborative projects. Maintain accurate and timely records of student attendance, behavior, and academic performance. Participate in school committees, staff meetings, and community events as a representative of the school. Promote digital literacy and responsible technology use in the classroom. Provide mentorship and guidance to students navigating personal, social, or academic challenges. Engage in reflective teaching practices and seek feedback to continuously improve instructional strategies. Support the integration of language revitalization efforts by incorporating Anishinaabemowin vocabulary and expressions into daily routines. Actively engage with families and community members to build trust and foster collaborative relationships that support student learning and well-being. Apply trauma-informed teaching strategies that recognize and respond to the lived experiences of Indigenous students and families. Commit to creating a culturally safe learning environment that actively challenges racism, bias, and systemic barriers. Serve as a positive role model who upholds the values of respect, humility, and responsibility in alignment with Anishinaabe teachings. Engage in continuous learning about Indigenous pedagogies, treaties, and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action relevant to education. Incorporate teachings about environmental stewardship and sustainability rooted in Indigenous knowledge systems.
