Position Overview
The Holocaust Education & Commemorations Coordinator plays a pivotal role in designing, delivering, and expanding Holocaust education, commemorations, and community engagement initiatives across Calgary. This role requires strategic coordination, strong relationship-building skills, and a deep passion for Holocaust education and remembrance. A key responsibility is recruiting, supporting, and collaborating with volunteers to plan and execute impactful programs.
Key Responsibilities
1. Commemorations
Plan and coordinate all Holocaust-related commemorative events, including
Yom HaShoah, Kristallnacht, and International Holocaust Remembrance Day
*.
Recruit, engage, and support volunteer chairs for multi-year program leadership.
Collaborate with Holocaust survivors, descendants, clergy, community members, and partner organizations to create inclusive and meaningful programs.
Oversee event logistics, including venue booking, setup, program content, ceremonial elements, and speaker invitations.
2. Education
Deliver engaging Holocaust education presentations and workshops for students, educators, and community groups.
Lead planning and delivery of the annual Holocaust Education Symposium in partnership with schools, volunteers, and institutions.
Develop and adapt educational materials for diverse audiences, ensuring cultural and age-appropriateness.
Provide resources and professional development opportunities for educators.
Coordinate volunteers--including educators, speakers, and facilitators--for school and community programs.
3. Community Development
Manage and expand the Holocaust Education Series in partnership with the Calgary Public Library and other cultural partners.
Develop innovative public programs, such as arts-based remembrance projects and special exhibitions.
Cultivate partnerships with schools, libraries, religious institutions, donors, and cultural organizations.
Represent Calgary Jewish Federation in public forums, educational networks, and advocacy initiatives.
Qualifications
Required:
Post-secondary degree in Education, History, Holocaust/Genocide Studies, Jewish Studies, Human Rights, or a related field (Master's degree an asset).
Minimum of 3 years' experience in program coordination, education, or community engagement.
Strong knowledge of Holocaust history, antisemitism, and human rights topics.
Excellent communication, public speaking, and interpersonal skills.
Demonstrated ability to build relationships with volunteers, educators, and diverse communities.
Proven event coordination skills with multiple stakeholders.
Preferred:
Experience working with Holocaust survivors and/or intergenerational groups.
Familiarity with Alberta's education system and curriculum.
Background in Jewish communal work or strong knowledge of Jewish traditions and history.
Experience with fundraising, donor relations, or grant writing.
Compensation
Compensation is commensurate with experience.
