High-Performance Team Development Specialist

. This Part-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.


The position of Engineering Teamwork Development Specialist will work under the supervision of Dr. Tom O'Neill in the Department of Psychology at the University of Calgary, who has been appointed the Arts and Engineering Chair in High-Performance Teamwork and Engineering Education.


The ideal candidate will have expertise in Industrial/Organizational Psychology, as well as proficiency in facilitating skill development workshops and experience in spearheading research projects related to engineering education and the impact of team interventions. Specifically, data analysis (quantitative and qualitative preferred), technical writing (e.g., publications and formal reports), and knowledge dissemination (e.g., conference presentations) skills are necessary for success in the role.


This is a one-year fixed-term part-time (20 hours/week) position for an Engineering Teamwork Development Specialist. The position may be extended on a year-to-year basis based on continued funding and job performance. Work cycles peak at the start and middle of each academic term, when courses require team building workshops and support launching peer feedback and team development assessments. During quieter periods, the successful candidate will engage in activities to enhance the visibility of the role and the work conducted within the Individual and Team Performance (ITP) lab (e.g., planning and workshops for tangential programs). The role operates in a hybrid model, with some days required in office depending on workshop scheduling. There will be a handful of opportunities to travel within Canada and internationally for conferences annually.



The primary purpose of this position is to cultivate a culture of high-performance teamwork across Schulich School of Engineering (SSE). The successful candidate will integrate evidence-based methodologies to design, deliver, and empirically evaluate team-development interventions for students, faculty, and staff. They will advance scholarship on team dynamics by conducting, publishing, and presenting rigorous research that identifies best practices in engineering education. In parallel, the role involves working closely with SSE students, faculty, and staff to provide ongoing teamwork support and ensure workshops and interventions are responsive to teamwork-related needs and goals. Through these primary initiatives, the Engineering Teamwork Development Specialist will provide opportunities for collaborative projects, knowledge sharing, and contribute to the development of teamwork skills essential for academic and professional success in the engineering field.

Summary of Key Responsibilities

(job functions include but are not limited to):

Lead a research program related to high-performance teamwork in engineering education in partnership with the Arts-Engineering Chair and SSE collaborators. This work will include: Designing and implementing research studies. Collecting, analyzing, and interpreting quantitative and qualitative data. Writing and preparing manuscripts (involvement in three publications during position tenure). Contributing to collaborative projects that advance understanding of teamwork in complex, transdisciplinary learning and professional environments. Presenting findings and sharing knowledge within SSE, across faculties, and at international conferences. Design and deliver workshops on high-performance teamwork across SSE. This work will include: Facilitating workshops for SSE's teaching and leadership teams, to provide them with evidence-based tools and strategies to best support students. Facilitating targeted skill development workshops for student teams (with a focus on design courses) and clubs. Adapting content for different audiences and ensuring alignment with best practices in pedagogy and teamwork development. Provide ongoing teamwork consultation and support in engineering courses (primarily design). This work will include: Engaging with instructors and coordinators for small and large courses (e.g., "core" first and second year) to understand teamwork needs and goals. Offering guidance and collaborating with instructors and coordinators to embed teamwork skill development within the course curriculum. Supporting instructors and coordinators in addressing challenges in student teams. Prepare and submit documents and formal reports related to the "Individual and Team Work" attribute to support accreditation. This work will include: Analyzing data collected through ITP Metrics across multiple courses to illustrate changes in teamwork skills over time (and as a result of workshops and interventions). Providing data-driven recommendations for the continuous improvement of teamwork education. Champion EDIA and Indigenous engagement in all aspects of the role. Demonstrate commitment to ITP Lab and its members (e.g., regularly attending meetings). Own and lead activities and tasks under the role's stewardship, while coordinating with the rest of the ITP team as appropriate. Ensure responsive communication during hours through emails, phone, and in-person modalities as needed.

Qualifications / Requirements:



M.A. or M.Sc. in Industrial-Organizational psychology required; experience facilitating, teaching, etc., in an informal or formal learning environment preferred. 1-3 years of graduate research experience involving research design, data collection and advanced statistical analyses. Knowledge of individual and team assessment, curriculum design, and teaching pedagogy. Knowledge of SSE's course structures, curriculum, learning technology and platforms, and related administrative procedures. Knowledge of the graduate attributes and accreditation processes outlined by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board. Experience developing, facilitating, and evaluating the impact of workshops, programs, or educational interventions. Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for writing and presenting. Proficiency with SPSS or R for data input, data preparation, and statistical analyses; familiarity with NVivo or other qualitative analysis software is an asset. Ability to manage numerous relationships and priorities proactively and efficiently. Sound judgement and decision-making; demonstrating resourcefulness while understanding instances where additional consultation is needed. Positive attitude and ability to work independently while contributing to a team-based environment. Flexibility to work on campus a few days per week and occasional conference travel.
