Heavy Equipment Operator (health & Safety Background Required)

Job Description

Pioneer Construction is looking for a hard-working, self-motivated employee with a proven record of safety and reliability to fill the position of Equipment Operator with a strong background in health and safety. Alongside the equipment operating duties, this position is also responsible for health & safety related tasks such as performing inspections, ensuring regulatory compliance, maintaining documentation, and promoting the safety culture within the company. This position is located in Dubreuilville, Ontario and is a full-time permanent position available with competitive wages and a benefits package.

Job Duties & Responsibilities:



Equipment Operation:



Safely operating an excavator, backhoe, and loader with experience in excavator/backhoe loading requirements. Perform daily pre-op and post-op inspections on equipment and attend daily safety meetings. Clean and lubricate equipment and refill equipment tanks. Complete daily inspections and reporting of production tasks. Identify, report and correct hazards. Secure special attachments to equipment. Operate hydraulic pumping systems. Operate two-way radios and other communication equipment. Team player and display professionalism toward our company and customers. Perform regular cleaning of motor vehicles and mobile equipment (inside and outside cab). Physical work including lifting (up to 50 lbs), bending, crouching, climbing, crawling and reaching repeatedly throughout the workday. Maintain accurate electronic hours of service logs and vehicle inspection logs when operating. Maintain a clean and tidy work environment and equipment. Work schedule consists of Monday to Friday with occasional evening and weekend work as required. Work in accordance with all internal, client and regulated health and safety policies, procedures and/or regulations, including wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Perform related duties as assigned by supervisor.

Health & Safety:



Conduct/participate in regular site inspections and recommend corrective actions for identified hazards or unsafe practices. Execute and/or coordinate internal inspections, internal audits, and participate in incident/accident investigations. Make recommendations for corrective actions in case of deviations found during inspections or investigations. Collaborate with Managers and Supervisors to monitor health and safety compliance and address safety concerns. Assist in the development and maintenance of health and safety policies and procedures and ensure that they reflect best practices and current policies / regulations. Provide awareness to workers, supervisors, managers about regulatory requirements including company health and safety standards, and industry and mining regulations. Deliver safety orientation and training for all new and existing employees. Assist in the maintenance of accurate records of all health and safety-related training. Compile and submit to the client the required records for inspections and identified documents on a regular basis. Conduct or assist in hazard and risk assessments related to equipment, tasks, and new processes, with management support. Assist Human Resources department with workplace investigations. Assist supervisors to ensure workers are complying with company and regulatory health and safety standards Serve as a liaison between the safety manager and on-site team Promote and maintain a strong culture of health and safety across the company through health and safety programs and initiatives.

Job Qualifications:



Education:



Valid G Class Driver's License is required. Standard First Aid, CPR and AED Certification is required. Relevant post-secondary training in Occupational Health and Safety or a combination of education and experience that is determined to be equivalent. Minimum 1 year experience operating an Excavator. Valid Certification to operate a hydraulic Excavator is required. Joint Health and Safety Committee Certification an asset. Surface Miner Common Core and any specialty modules appropriate to the equipment being operated is considered an asset. High school diploma or equivalent is considered an asset.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:



Experience in a related Health and Safety position within the construction, surface mining, and industrial industries. Excellent investigative skills to handle a range of incidents, accidents, and conflicts. Good understanding of current legislation and regulations as it pertains to health and safety. Ability to provide detailed reports and collaborate on the development of safety procedures. Proficiency with database applications and administrative systems, specifically Microsoft Office and Windows. Knowledgeable and highly competent health and safety professional who is passionate about Health and Safety and enjoys interacting with people. Successfully passed comprehensive pre-employment third party testing requirements (drug and alcohol testing and a Criminal Background Check (CPIC) and any other requirements they impose on contractors). Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to effectively communicate with internal and external customers. Ability to adapt to last-minute changes as dictated by the needs of our customers. Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines, while maintaining a cheerful outlook and providing exemplary customer service. Ability to work independently and to carry out assignments to completion within parameters of instructions given, prescribed routines, and standard accepted practices.
