Health information is an important part of quality health care and can help patients and families engage in their care and decision making. Visual communications can help make health information more clear and understandable. The Visual Communications Designer helps patients and families engage in their healthcare by creating clear visual health communications with the Patient Education and Engagement Team. This role will provide graphic design, illustration and visual communications support, and will facilitate the development of visual health communications tools based on user design principles. The role works closely with many stakeholders across UHN, including healthcare professionals, Patient Partners, researchers, educators and others. The Visual Communications Designer also provides support to the Patient Engagement Portfolio by creating visual tools and reports.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Plan and manage graphic design projects and initiatives
  • Integrate principles of health literacy, user design principles and equity, diversity and inclusion into visual projects
  • Completes design and layout of resources including posters, brochures, web resources, digital wallpapers, screen displays, manuals and other tools as needed
  • Provides design guidance and expertise to other members of the team and portfolio
  • Helps facilitate capacity building related to visual design and health communications
  • Design and illustration of physiology, healthcare equipment, icons, other graphics
  • Source images and identifying suitable images within the collection to meet resource needs
  • Maintains UHN and Patient Engagement branding by ensuring that all designs and concepts comply with branding guidelines and provide consistency
  • Maintains quality for minimum cost, staying within budgets
  • Administers cost recovery processes, including quotes and invoicing for work completed
  • Uses required software for graphic design and formatting
  • Maintains archives and filing as per department standards, using electronic filing systems
  • Applies and audits accessibility of documents and resources
  • Uses and manages necessary current hardware/software effectively (including but not limited to Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Acrobat, PowerPoint, Canva, MailChimp)
Qualifications:
  • Minimum completion of a 3 year community college program in graphic design, biomedical communication or recognized equivalent
  • Minimum two (2) years of practical and related experience, preferably more than 3years
  • Knowledge of principles of effective health communication; adult education, plain language, patient engagement
  • Experience managing visual design projects and timelines
  • Good communication (verbal & written), customer service and listening skills that demonstrate compassion, empathy and respect for colleagues, patients, and familie
  • Ability to work in a self-directed manner
  • Ability to identify connections across different hospitals and programs and meet multiple program needs simultaneously
  • Ability to work effectively as a team member
  • Fluency in a language other than English is an asset
