Health Promotion Specialist (temporary)

Job Description

The Health Promotion Specialist is primarily responsible for the development, implementation, and assessment of initiatives designed to support and engage students in maintaining and enhancing their overall wellbeing. The incumbent is an integral member of the Student Leadership Development and First Year Experience (SLD/FYE) team ensuring wellbeing is integrated into fundamental programming and services. With a focus on the implementation of the student-focused initiatives tied to the College?s Wellness Strategy and First Year Experience, the incumbent develops and oversees services designed to enhance proactive intervention and access throughout the student life cycle. This includes outreach and student-led initiatives, liaising with campus and community partners, as well as designing and delivering wellness and intervention training, consultation, and education. The incumbent works in collaboration with College programs and services and with community stakeholders to ensure students have access to, and knowledge of, all well-being supports and services available both on and off-campus.

What You?ll be Doing

Developing and coordinating the implementation of independent learning opportunities (i.e. passive programming) and collective learning experiences (including psychoeducational workshops) relating to topics that foster and promote healthy campus communities (e.g. healthy relationships, safe drinking practices, mental health, etc.);

Delivering and presenting regular programming which align to College Wellness Strategy, Student Affairs and Unit goals while providing rich learning opportunities for students (workshops, events, Thrive Week, etc.);

Coordinating a range of health promotion events to engage students throughout the academic year;

Leading/facilitating educational Mental Health and Wellness workshops and training programs for 500+ student leaders annually;

Developing and leading implementation of an evidence-based wellness education and communications strategy, informed by the student life cycle within each campus and program and predictable cycles of student need;

Creating, developing and maintaining College?s online resources related to health and wellness resources for students and facilitating intersections within College mobile applications;

Establishing and maintaining a marketing plan, including a social media presence, to promote health and well-being for students in College, and community resources related to student health and wellness;

Facilitating selection, training, and ongoing supervision to Peer Health and Wellness Ambassadors (20+) through class visits, independent learning initiatives, large scale workshops, presence at fairs and large events;

Acting as departmental lead and key liaison in developing and maintaining community partnerships;

Engaging potential partners in stakeholder discussions, the Health and Wellness Strategy and Communication Plan, and College-wide initiatives, as it pertains to student wellbeing/initiatives;

Participating on College and community committees/working groups and advising on issues of health and wellness;

Planning, coordinating and conducting research and engagement within community of practice to monitor emerging trends and best practices which may inform resource development, programming, and partnership opportunities;

Analyzing research and assessment findings and publishing reports with recommendations for continued improvement of services and supports and educating College partners via consultations;

Performing other related duties, as assigned.

Your exemplary organization and time management skills allow you to successfully manage resources and documentation.

You have established ability to support students (both one-on-one and in group settings) in building skills related to social connection, resilience, coping, personal capacity for health, and other dimensions of well- being.

You have proven ability to analyze and interpret assessment and benchmarking data to inform practice.

You have the ability to work with minimal supervision both independently and within a collaborative care setting.

You have experience using a variety of techniques for successful program delivery , both virtually and in person and have excellent presentation skills which lean on learning and development best practice to engage students effectively.

You have the skills and knowledge to work with an increasingly diverse student and staff population as well as a proven commitment to anti-oppression, equity, and inclusion.

The successful candidate will also meet the following qualifications:

4-year degree in a field related to mental health, health sciences, health promotion, health studies, social work, and/or social sciences;

3 years of practical experience providing guidance, direction, and leadership to peer support programs in the area of mental health and wellness, counselling techniques, or equivalent (equivalency will be considered);

Experience delivering presentations and workshops to diverse audiences;

An additional certificate, diploma, or professional designation in Mental Health, Counselling Techniques, Education, Leadership, or Student Affairs and Services will be considered an asset.
