The Health and Safety Officer role represents a key core competence. This is an essential supporting role that has controlled and moderate impact on the success of Fermar Paving Limited ("the Company"). This role plays an essential role in maintaining a pro-active culture of Safety through the development and implementation of industry leading best health, safety and environment practices ensuring the safety of all employees of the Company, and the public in general.
The Health and Safety Officer provides support and reports to the VP of Risk Management by assisting in monitoring compliance with all workplace Safety standards, programs and procedures to ensure every employee get "Home Safe Every Day".
The Health and Safety Officer will assist in mitigating risk by performing investigations, incidents, accidents and audits. Represent the Company as a HSE contact receiving inquiries from clients, sub-contractors and external entities (e.g., Unions, MOL and WSIB etc.)
Key Responsibilities
Represent and work cooperatively with employees, clients, government entities, subcontractors on health and safety issues
Ensure regulatory compliance on the job site and abiding by the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations
Auditing site safety performance and evaluate implementation, recommending corrective actions and follow up to ensure implementation
Participating in and advising on investigations determining the cause and corrective actions to prevent recurrence
Conduct orientations with new and returning workers
Participate and organize corporate health & safety committee meetings, as required
Accompany third part inspectors during site reviews.
Oversee compliance to issues identified during third party inspections
File safety documentation as required
Work with human resources to create and implement new company policies while ensuring old policies are still relevant and up to date
Ensure all safety equipment is in good working order and replace any that is in non-compliance
Complete respirator fit testing to all employees that use respirators
Assist in the COR audits as required
Complete site-specific safety plans
Administration duties as required
Track and review safety paperwork submissions for accuracy and completeness
Perform monthly site inspections
Education and Experience
Post-secondary degree or diploma in Occupational health and Safety
Minimum 3 years experience in a safety role is required
Experience in construction sector is preferred
Working knowledge of OSHA and Construction Regulations
Health and Safety Certification or working towards NCSO is an asset
