The NSGEU is seeking a permanent full-time Occupational Health and Safety Officer.
DUTIES:
Provides professional and technical advice and services in the field of Occupational Health and Safety to union members and employers throughout the province and to NSGEU staff and union leadership. Assists workplaces in the establishment of Occupational Health and Safety Committees as needed. Collaboratively works with members, employers, health providers and OHS professionals on OH&S matters and initiatives. Provides advice and information to members on OH&S, WCB and human rights issues. Develops creative and innovative course curriculum and materials for all NSGEU Occupational Health and Safety training sessions. Delivers Health and Safety training and information sessions to NSGEU members, employers, and other organizations. Represents the NSGEU on committees relating to occupational health and safety matters, legislative review, disability and return to work programs, environmental initiatives and WCB matters. Researches relevant information such as the application of the OH&S Act, collective agreements, legislative standards, best practices and case law. Liaise with servicing staff and legal counsel on servicing files including the preparation of materials and arguments for presentations before adjudication hearings and before the Labour Board.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Requires a degree or certificate in Occupational Health and Safety and three years of related work experience in the Occupational Health and Safety field (or an equivalent combination of education and experience). Requires extensive knowledge of legislation and regulations affecting NSGEU members as well as specialized training in Occupational Health and Safety related legislation and regulations as well as a sound knowledge of psychological health and safety.
KNOWLEDGE:
Comprehensive knowledge of the Nova Scotia Health and Safety Act, regulations and codes of practice, as well as familiarity with the Workers Compensation Act, regulations and policies. Knowledge of workplace hazards and resources regarding health and safety matters. Experience in the trade union movement and knowledge of trade union history and public sector unionism are considered assets.
ABILITIES:
This is a senior staff position in our organization. This can be a demanding job and involves significant contact with NSGEU members and various employers. The successful applicant must have the ability to plan and organize training sessions and conferences as well as the ability to demonstrate leadership, investigative, interpretative and communication skills. The successful applicant will have the ability to analyze complex problems, manage caseloads, exhibit proficiency in the preparation and presentation of OHS matters and have the ability to prepare concise reports. This position requires excellent oral and written communication skills, good interpersonal, mediation and negotiation skills, well-developed investigative and interpretive skills as well as the ability to develop positive working relationships with membership, staff and employers.
The successful candidate may be required to work some evenings weekends. Servicing Staff are required, as a condition of employment, to provide a suitable vehicle to use in the performance of their duties and must hold a valid Nova Scotia Drivers Licence. Some travel may be required.
