HEADRIG SAWYER OPERATOR

Company Overview

Terminal Forest Products Ltd. (TFP) is a medium-sized, privately owned forest products company with operations on the southwest coast of British Columbia and northwest Washington State. The company owns and operates two sawmills, a remanufacturing plant as well as a dryland log sorting operation. It specializes in manufacturing a wide variety of finished Western Red Cedar lumber products destined for domestic and international markets and offers log custom cutting and log custom sorting services at company-owned facilities.

Headrig Sawyer Operator

The headrig operator will report directly to the Sawmill Supervisor. The primary focus of the job is to guide the logs through the band saw blades (Head Rig) and the related equipment including chipping head, to cut logs into cants, or produce side cut lumber ensuring accurate sizes, to optimize recovery and production, as directed by your supervisor.

This is an hourly USW union position with a comprehensive benefit package. Details of the collective agreement can be found on the United Steel Workers 1-1937 website.

Duties include:

Always maintain the highest standards with respect to safety. To breakdown logs into required sizes in line with "merch-type" cutting orders, salvaging shallow clears as required. Adjust chipper head to depth of cut required. Uses tapers for maximum grade and recovery. Adjusts water and/or oil flow on guides. Exercises caution in use of turning equipment to prevent damage to the cants and logs. Required constant attention to running band off wheel due to slivers in guide, ice and foreign materials in logs, feed speed, etc.

Position requirements include:

Ability to work in a team environment or independently with little supervision.

Must have good working knowledge of grade and lumber manufacturing. Knowledge of functionality and maintenance the headrig equipment. Schedule flexibility - as work may require day and weekend shifts. Valid class BC license. The applicant will do additional duties as required.
