HAISLA CULTURE CAMP GUIDE/LANGUAGE INSTRUCTOR

Job Overview





Reporting to the Manager, Culture & Language, the Haisla Culture Camp Guide/Language Instructor is responsible to assist in program delivery of the Haisla Nation's annual Culture Camp during summer months.


Organizational Status





The Haisla Nation is the band government of the Haisla people. Our mission is to build a powerful, prosperous and proud community, healthy in mind, body and spirit. We believe in building a strong and thriving community, with healthy and happy members and a sustained and prosperous environment. We are about 2023+ people, with approximately 700 living in Kitamaat Village. We have lived off the land and waters of our traditional territory for thousands of years, and it remains the focus of all we do.


Duties & Responsibilities




Assist with camp setup, maintenance, and cleanup to ensure a sage and respectful environment. Creating and leading various language activities, lessons, and games that will be outlined in the daily camp schedule. Support and guide participants during daily camp activities, including land-based teachings and traditional practices. Supervision of the youth, ensuring their safety and well-being at all times. Maintaining a clean work area, clearing clutter and garbage as necessary. Actively support other camp guides to participate in language classes and weave language use into daily routines and interactions. Stay in campsite for 13 days for the duration of the employment and supervise in cabins/tents. Model appropriate camp behavior, cultural respect, and positive engagement for youth. Maintaining a positive and enthusiastic attitude so the youth can make the most of their experience. Serving as a positive role model for camp participants, upholding the values and objectives of the camp. Engaging participants in meaningful cultural activities and experiences. Providing guidance and support to camp participants in learning about and connecting with their culture. Facilitating learning experiences that align with the camp's educational objectives and outcomes. Ensuring the safety, health, and well-being of all camp participants. Building and maintaining relationships within camp community and with visiting elders and knowledge keepers. Incident reporting to the necessary staff. Perform other tasks within scope of position as required.

Skills & Qualifications




Strong understanding and appreciation of xa'aisla culture and language. Experience in teaching xa'aisla language. Valid First Aid certificate is an asset. Advanced Wilderness First Aid or CPR. Responsible Adult Certificate, or willingness to obtain certification. Strong interpersonal, communication and teamwork skills. Able to work in a fast-paced environment. Able to follow direction, take initiative, and adapt to a dynamic camp setting. Comfortable working indoors in various weather conditions and on the land. Valid BC driver's license and own vehicle is an asset. Satisfactory completion of criminal records check (with vulnerable sector screening if relevant).

Salary Range

: $1,200.00/week


Position Type

: Full-time seasonal position for the summer.
