Job Description


Established in 1992, the Gwich\'in Tribal Council (GTC) is an Indigenous organization that represents Gwich\'in Participants in the Mackenzie-Delta of the Northwest Territories and across Canada. The GTC protects and advances the interests of the Gwich\'in through quality work, collaborative approaches and good governance to improve the lives and preserve the culture of the Gwich\'in.

The GTC is seeking highly motivated individuals to fill the position of Executive Director working at one of its Designated Gwich\'in Organizations, known as Gwich\'in Councils, in the communities of Aklavik, Inuvik, Fort McPherson and Tsiigehtchic. The Executive Director manages and implements all work related to the goals and interests of the Gwich\'in Council under the direction of the President who is elected by the Participant membership. The Executive Director has delegated authority from the Gwich\'in Council to perform other duties that are in accordance with the rights and interests of Participants to the Gwich\'in Comprehensive Land Claim Agreement (GCLCA), including:

  • Support for the local Gwich\'in Council which is a Designated Gwich\'in Organization under Chapter 7 of the GCLCA;
  • Day-to-day Operations Management of the Gwich\'in Council;
  • Staff Supervision
  • Program Management;
  • Required Reporting to the GTC and funding agencies; and,
  • Other duties as outlined in detailed position description that can be provided upon request.
This position reports directly to the President and will have less than five (5) direct reports.

QUALIFICATIONS/COMPETENCIES

The ideal candidate will have:
  • A College Diploma or University Degree in Public/Business Administration, Management/Commerce, Social Sciences, or a related field;
  • An Understanding and a working knowledge of the GCLCA or other modern treaties;
  • Knowledge of territorial/federal legislation related to for-profit and not-for-profit corporations
  • At least three (3) years direct supervisory experience;
  • Fluency in English;
  • Basic computer skills in a Microsoft Office operating environment (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, Note), Email, Database applications and Internet; and,
  • Experience in a cross-cultural setting.
COMPENSATION

A competitive salary starting at $117,300 and an additional benefits package will be offered including a northern allowance, health and dental benefits, and generous leave entitlements.
