The Gwa'sala-'Nakwaxda'xw Nations (GNN) Bighouse Coordinator will play a key role in the whole operations of the GNN Bighouse Society. This position will combine practical and administrative skills. The selected candidate must have good interpersonal communication, to ensure the efficient and smooth running of GNN's Bighouse.
The GNN's Bighouse Coordinator will work at the Bighouse, where an office will be provided once completed and will have the flexibility to carry out some tasks remotely/from home with the agreement of The Director, to who the coordinator reports to.
Requirements:
High school diploma or GED
Five to ten years experience preferably in a First Nations Community or Indigenous Organization
Valid BC Class 5 Drivers License
Clear criminal record check
Preferable skills and qualifications:
Demonstrate the ability to follow direction and work with little to no supervision
Knowledge and understanding to the Gwa'sala-'Nakwaxda'xw Nations Culture, Language, and Practices
Excellent communication skills to effectively maintain solution-focused dialogue
Ability to develop collaborative relationships with community members and Leadership
Knowledge of unique needs of GNN Band or the willingness to learn
Ability to travel and to work flexible hours to the needs of the community
Duties and Responsibilities:
Outreach to community members, including home-visits with youth, families and elders,
Research and build relationships with internal and external resources, in accessing gifts for future celebrations,
Oversee development of invitations as well as distribution of invitations to neighbouring nations for the GNN Bighouse Opening ceremonies,
Research/Support GNN Culture/histories to assist Families and Clans preparing to Potlatch at Bighouse Opening
Work with the Bighouse Society and Leadership to determine cultural needs for the Bighouse at completion date, including carvings, regalia, etc.,
Work with artists and carvers to engage in production of ceremonial carvings and gifts to be distributed,
Work with schools and youth to promote involvement through gathering cultural articles to create woven and food items,
Build and maintain positive relationships with community members through networking and on-going communications,
Assist in the development of policy re: use of the Bighouse, including kitchen and meeting rooms,
Implement booking policy for the Bighouse, for family and community events,
Work with the Bighouse Society to assist with process to hire a manager, to oversee management of the Bighouse after the Opening Ceremonies,
Complete timely reports on all activities including breakdown of hours, travel costs, and updates on project timelines and progress on a bi-weekly basis,
Ensure filing and submission of reports on dates required for the Bighouse Society,
Adhere on standards, policies, procedures, and protocols set by the Bighouse Society and the Gwa'sala-'Nakwaxda'xw Nations Administration,
Other duties as required and assigned.
Positions at the Gwa'sala-'Nakwaxda'xw Nations is considered positions of trust. The selected candidate will be subjected to a 3-month assessment and a 6-month probationary period at which time the performance of the candidate will be evaluated and the decision made to continue the contract for the remainder of the year. At the end of that contracted year, a further performance evaluation will be completed to determine whether the contract will be extended in the next year(s).
