QUALIFICATIONS




Grade 12 education (MB Standards) Certified Landscape Technician(Manitoba) Current license as a Tree Pruner and Pesticide Applicator or willing to obtain Other combinations of suitable education and experience may be considered Training in proper lawn, tree and shrub care, pruning, application of fertilizers and pesticides, and care of tropical plants. Recent experience in commercial landscaping and groundskeeping maintenance Province of Manitoba Class 5 Drivers Licence, or equivalent from province of residence, and access to a personal vehicle to provide service within Prairie Mountain Health Demonstrated organizational skills, and the ability to work independently Demonstrated problem solving and decision making skills Demonstrated flexibility to facilitate changes in techniques and procedures in a changing environment Demonstrated knowledge and competence of skills and concepts related to the position Demonstrated communication skills Ability to respect and promote confidentiality Ability to perform the duties of the position on a regular basis Ability to respect and promote a culturally diverse population Ability to work effectively and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, clients and within interdisciplinary team

POSITION SUMMARY:






Under the general direction of the Area Manager Capital Planning/Infrastructure/Maintancence, the incumbent is responsible for: performing routine grounds work; acting as a resource person for Labourers and other staff assisting with grounds work; inspecting work performed by the Labourers and other staff; assisting with the development of operating procedures and landscape plans; scheduling and supervising planting and maintenance programs; care and maintenance of indoor tropical plants; selecting appropriate pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers; and performing a variety of related duties.


RESPONSIBILITIES:




Overview:




Performs routine grounds work (cutting grass, planting and watering flowers and shrubs, shovelling snow, etc.).

Maintains knowledge of type of trees, shrubs, plans, lawns including their production and care

Maintains knowledge of herbicides, pesticides, fetilizers and their appropriate uses

Incumbent is responsible to maintain current licenses for tree pruning and pesticide application as applicable."

Operates power equipment in the maintenance of Prairie Mountain Health grounds and snow clearing.

Coordinates the work of snow clearing contractors.

Acts as a resource person for Labourers and Helpers assisting with grounds work; providing advice and assistance, and recommending appropriate actions.

Inspects work performed by Labourers and assisting Helpers to ensure it is completed to standards.

In conjunction with the Supervisor, prepares schedule of daily work activities for personnel assigned to assist with groundskeeping duties.

Assists in developing written procedures for proper care of Prairie Mountain Health grounds and grounds equipment in conjunction with the Supervisor.

Assists in the development of landscape plans for new buildings and properties, and for the improvement of existing properties, in conjunction with the Supervisor.

Schedules and oversees planting and maintenance programs for lawns, plants, trees and shrubs, under the supervision of the Facilities Services Supervisor, in order to ensure that grounds are kept neat and attractive.

In conjunction with the Supervisor, selects the types of flowers, plants, trees and shrubs to be planted.

Selects pesticides, herbicides and fertilisers as required, and ensures that an adequate inventory of all supplies and planting stock is maintained.

Under the direction of the Supervisor, determines equipment needs and schedules maintenance of equipment and machinery.

Ensures winter maintenance and snow and ice removal from roadways, walkways, parking lots and building entrances.

Ensures that grounds staff comply with all safety regulations.

Inspects contracted landscape work in conjunction with the Supervisor.

Removes garbage and general rubbish deposited within the grounds of the hospital complex.

Emptys ashtrays and geneneral rubbish associated within the grounds of the hospital complex

Cleans up medical sharps or spills within the grounds.

Ensures that materials and tools are properly maintained and ensures economic use of same.

Maintains an ongoing knowledge of products and trends in the field of horticulture; assesses and recommends on applicability of various plants, shrubs and flowers in different areas of the Health Sciences Centre grounds.

Reports on problem areas of grounds and what action might be taken to resolve the problem.

Adheres to all safety and health regulations and safe work practices.

May be required to perform other duties and functions related to this job description not exceeding above stated skills and capabilities.

Other duties as assigned.
