Reporting to the ILM Graphics Lead, the Graphic Designer/Technical Illustrator is member of the Individual Learning Module (ILM) Creative Team who provides graphic design and illustration services for print and digital learning resources. The ILM Graphic Designer/Technical Illustrator plays a crucial role in creating a wide range of visual content to aid student comprehension and support trades and apprenticeship teaching and learning.



Working alongside the Content Development Team, this role requires the ability to translate concepts and source materials into publication-ready images.



The Graphic Designer/Technical Illustrator will follow ILM Graphic Image Guidelines and specifications.



Image types include isometric and perspective drawings, 3-D vector illustrations, industry-specific technical diagrams and schematics, and photographic image files.



This role requires technical accuracy, excellent drawing skills, thorough understanding of colour and other design fundamentals, digital image editing and optimization of photographs, and adaptability in embracing evolving technologies for print and digital production.



A high level of proficiency in Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop and basic familiarity with MS Word is required. Proficiency in 3D illustration software such as AutoCAD and 3D rendering software such as Blender is an asset. Incumbents will follow and maintain project workflows using online project management platforms. Familiarity with Monday.com is an asset. Open to incorporating AI tools for ideation and sketch development. Skills in communication and collaboration, time management, and attention to detail are essential.




Key Responsibilities:




Image Editing and Creation (80%)

Follow ILM image guidelines and specifications and art direction from Graphics Lead and incorporate edits from Learning Designer. Recommend the illustration or graphic type most suited to the content and its context as needed Produce mock-ups or sketches as part of the design process. Produce accurate and visually engaging technical illustrations, diagrams, schematics, flat and 3-D graphics using a variety of traditional and digital illustration techniques Digital image editing and optimization of photographs Translate complex technical concepts into clear and easy-to-understand visuals for full colour and black and white publications. Collaborate closely with a project team of learning designers and subject matter experts to ensure illustrations accurately represent technical details, specifications, and functionality, and to integrate illustrations seamlessly and consistently into ILM content. Perform image research as required to provide clearer alternatives. Enhance the clarity and usability of learning module documents through visual contributions. Utilize industry-standard illustration software tools to create and refine illustrations and images. Stay updated on emerging tools and techniques in the field of technical illustration and photo editing. Contribute to the development and maintenance of consistent visual styles and guidelines for technical illustrations.

Skills & Abilities:






Strong design skills and knowledge of design principles are required for technical drawings, illustrations, and graphics for print and digital media Understanding of technical/trades concepts and the ability to interpret technical documentation. Excellent attention to detail and a high level of accuracy in translating technical specifications into visuals. Knowledge and understanding of various printing procedures and media. Technical knowledge to prepare digital files and press-ready artwork for various printed media. Expert knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator) and Microsoft Office365. Knowledge and understanding of ILM products, ILM style guide, processes, and procedures is required. Strong communication and collaboration skills to work effectively within interdisciplinary teams. Ability to receive art direction and feedback. Ability to work well independently.

Qualifications:



Completion of a Degree or a 2-year Diploma in Graphic Design, Visual Communications, or Illustration. 2+ years of experience in an agency, studio, freelance or corporate setting.

Remuneration: $2,250.85-2,989.31 bi-weekly, plus a comprehensive benefits package. (Classification - Multi-Media Specialist I)






This position is covered by the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) Collective Agreement.
