Job Description
The Canadian Rivers Institute at UPEI is seeking a B.Sc. graduate-level student to complete and environmental DNA study on PEI freshwater mussels.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- The incumbent will collect environmental DNA (eDNA) samples in PEI and New Brunswick Rivers using portable eDNA sampler
- Extraction of eDNA will be conducted in the laboratory
- eDNA will be examined using primer-probe RT-qPCR techniques and evaluated against synthetic nucleotide sequences to obtain copy number
- A manuscript for submission to a peer review journal will be prepared by the end of the term
- An honours B.Sc. in biology
- Experience in collection of environmental DNA samples
- A minimum of one year experience in conducting and analyzing RT-qPCR
- Demonstrated ability to write scientific theses/papers
- Qualified to drive UPEI vehicles, at least 23 years of age with a Cass 5 PEI driver\'s license or equivalent
- Working knowledge of local stream invertebrates, particularly mollusks
