Work Arrangements

This regular full-time (35 hours per week) position is available starting December 5, 2022. Regular hours of work are Monday to Friday, 9:00 am - 5:00 pm. Occasional evening and/or weekend work may be required. The position is located at the New Westminster campus; however, successful candidate must be available for occasional work at the Coquitlam campus. The Role

The Global Engagement Officer is responsible for leading a portfolio of programs, events, and initiatives related to on-campus internationalization, global citizenship education, and promoting student, faculty and staff mobility. The Global Engagement Officer works closely with administrators, faculty members, staff and students to assess stakeholder needs related to global engagement, program design and other initiatives that meet those needs. The Global Engagement Officer tracks progress and reports on outcomes of initiatives that support strategic decision making.
Responsibilities

1. Network development and promotion of internationalization at the College

a. Take a lead in approaching faculty and departments to develop global engagement or internationalization at home programs and initiatives;

b. Facilitate the implementation of faculty-initiated activities;

c. Build connections with a student network of volunteers and mentors, and provide leadership opportunities in global engagement initiatives;

d. Build and support college-wide committees of relevance to global engagement initiatives as needed.

2. Develop educational initiatives, and liaise with internal/external stakeholders in the development of relevant professional development activities & programs

a. Initiate and implement internationalization professional development projects with academic and non-academic divisions;

b. Support a network of faculty and staff engaged in curriculum internationalization initiatives;

c. Work with the library collections liaison to create and maintain an up-to-date intercultural and internationalization resources for instructors, staff and students;

d. Work with the Human Resource department on College-wide professional development initiatives to support internationalization at home goals;

e. Ongoing development and operations of the Global Competency Certificate program;

f. Work with Student Services on integrated global engagement projects;

g. Work with the Financial Aid Office in support of study abroad and global engagement goals;

h. Work with the Douglas Student Union on student-centred initiatives.

3. Design, develop, and oversee successful execution of global engagement campus-wide events, programs and campaigns

a. Work with internal (e.g. Marketing and Communications Office, Douglas College International, Student Life) or external event coordinator(s) on global engagement events;

b. Liaise with MCO for promotional material creation and production;

c. Collaborate with facilities or other departments for logistical aspects;

d. Build event and program timelines and implementation plans;

e. Support and organize committees for events and programs when applicable;

f. Oversee BCGEU staff members working at events and programs;

g. Build relationships with external or internal stakeholders to help organize and promote events and programs;

h. Prepare and manage global engagement event and program specific budgets;

i. Organize and co-coordinate programs with International Students Services focused on domestic and international student integration.

4. Collaborate with MCO on the communication plan, and promotion of internationalization initiatives at the College

a. Provide direction and coordination for the global engagement annual communications plan;

b. Oversee and lead Global competency certificate marketing and promotion;

c. Present Global Engagement updates to, and collect feedback from, VPAC, FECs/DACs and at Faculty and related committees;

d. Present strategic priorities and updates related to global engagement initiatives to staff and college-wide committees;

e. Manage committee communications by collecting/taking notes, organizing minutes/notes, and reporting back to committees;

f. Manage social media accounts related to global engagement in collaboration with MCO (including posting, managing comments and concerns);

g. Liaise with MCO and contractors on production of promotional materials related to global engagement.

5. Conduct research, analysis, and detailed reporting to support various strategic initiatives

a. Research and recommend best practices related to global engagement and internationalization at home initiatives;

b. Meet with peer institutions to share best practices related to internationalization at home;

c. Attend conferences on behalf of Global Engagement to present and gather best practices to inform strategic initiatives;

d. Coordinate an annual College-wide global engagement survey in collaboration with the Office of Institutional effectiveness;

e. Collect, organize, and report global engagement data to inform the strategic direction taken by management and Faculties.

6. Supervisory responsibilities

a. Identify, interview and hire Student Assistant positions under the direction of the Manager of Global Engagement;

b. Provide direction to and schedule BCGEU staff during on and off-campus events as required;

c. Coordinate the scheduling and daily operations of student assistant work including monitoring absences and providing time sheet approval;

d. Supervise work performance and conduct periodic performance evaluations, as well as exit interviews for Student Assistants;

e. Provide onsite supervision for College events that involve global engagement activities.

7. Other duties as assigned related to intra-departmental committee/project work or global engagement initiatives
To Be Successful in this Role You Will Need * Completion of a Bachelor's degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in Education, International Education, International Relations or related field. Completion of a Master's degree in the above fields is an asset.

  • A minimum of three years of work experience in International Education, preferably in the areas of Study Abroad, Faculty Mobility, Student Engagement, or Student Success. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Demonstrated ability to create and implement an annual work plan or curriculum.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with senior administrators on strategic initiatives.
  • Planning, organization, reporting, and committee chairing abilities in order to coordinate cross-institutional teams of staff, faculty, students and administrators to host events and implement institution wide initiatives.
  • Excellent interpersonal and cross-cultural communication skills including written and verbal fluency in the English language.
  • Strong working knowledge of the post-secondary educational system in BC, especially related to International Education.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with a range of computer software applications and social media tools used in the unit including, Web Design Tools, Sharepoint, Project Management Tools, Survey Tools, Database Management Systems, and Microsoft office programs including Excel, Powerpoint, Word, Planner, and MS Teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform under extreme pressure during peak periods of concentrated activity.

  • adapt speaking and presentation styles to stakeholders from different professional and cultural background;

  • work as a team or independently under minimum supervision to establish priorities and to meet deadlines;
  • strong advocacy skills as evidenced by experience working with a wide variety of stakeholders.
