Position Summary
We are looking for a Global Agriculture Intern to join us for between 4 - 6 months, ideally between April and October, on a project to solve management issues with new potato varieties.Based in Florenceville, New Brunswick, Canada, this internship offers the opportunity to look into different management practices in new varieties to improve and optimize performance, and to develop, execute and report on trials with the team.This position also offers the potential to join our Global Agriculture Graduate Program for a successful intern, providing further opportunity to learn and grow within McCain.What You Will Be Working OnThe focus of this internship will be to problem solve the identified agronomic issues on the growth of certain new varieties at various stages of their production, and to identify solutions.Looking at different management practices for new varieties, you will develop trial protocol with the team, execute planting, monitor the trials and collect data to be able to report on findings and make recommendations. New varieties add a competitive advantage to McCain\'s through contracting benefits, processing benefits and cost recovery benefits, in addition to agronomic benefits to the growers, as well as reduced risk to our customers on supply chain changes by supplying them with varieties that have less variation in useable yields due to the impact of climate change.The solutions on nutrient management practices and variety management that will be identified through these trials will be shared with all regions using these varieties and the impact to McCain\'s on these exclusive varieties has potential for a great impact.What You Will LearnDuring this internship, you will be able to achieve the following project objectives:
1. Determine if a new variety will set heavier, without aborting tubers throughout the season with the use of plant nutrition practices
2. Determine the possibility of line selection on a key new variety
3. Determine plantlet to minituber fertility practices on new vs. standard variety in greenhouse settings.
4. Determine the influence of fertilizers on the dry matter spread in individual tubers of new varietiesWhat You Need to be SuccessfulWe look for a dynamic, motivated student with a healthy interest to join our team, get involved and make an impact.
  • The ideal candidate needs to have experience in small plot trial design and execution
  • Currently in a university program in 2nd year or beyond is preferred
  • Scientific background, an agronomic background is ideal
  • You need to be self-motiviated, determined and have strong analytic skills with experience in data analysis and reporting
  • You can\'t be afraid to get dirty - working in soil, in the fields is part of the day to day job
  • Superb organizational skills are a must. You need to be a problem solver and able to work with excel to perform statistical analysis
  • You must be dedicated to embrace and champion safety
  • Ability to manage projects to completion is key, but most of all we are looking for a highly engaged and motivated individual who wants to develop and really make a difference
