Together we are working with Nova Scotians to build a better future through sustainable natural resource management as we all benefit from the natural health and wealth of the province.About Our OpportunityUnder the direction of the Manager of Forest Inventory, at the Truro Office, the Forest Inventory and GIS Supervisor will lead the staff and the planning, development and maintenance of resources required to support various specialized provincial level programs such as Photo Interpreted Forest Inventory, Silviculture and Harvest Tracking data collection, and Pre-Treatment Assessment Application. They are responsible for identifying, designing, and implementing these programs to meet the current and future needs of the department. Requiring collaborative consultation with technical and professional experts and exploration of technological advances that will allow for improvement to these programs.Primary AccountabilitiesYou will be responsible for:

  • The supervision, training, and setting schedules and evaluating performance targets for 10-15 staff engaged in these programs.
  • Coordination of data capture, storage, analysis, and delivery of data for their specific programs and supporting or providing direction to other sections with their data needs
  • Overseeing the development, maintenance, and implementation of specifications for processes related to the needs of their related programs.
  • Developing and maintaining technical specification documents for the procedures and processes within programs for which they are responsible.
  • Working closely with the manager and procurement staff to engage qualified contractors to complete work required for the programs within the guidelines of the government procurement processes.
  • Working closely with those within the Forest Inventory Section and others within the department to ensure that the program information is understood and accessible for those that use the data.
  • Working with the team and others in the industry to understand and source new and developing technologies to improve processes, products, services and working conditions for the team and programs.
Qualifications and ExperienceThis position required a University degree in Forestry or Geomatics with 6 years or more of related experience with supervisory skills and experience leading a team.Additional requirements for this position:
  • Working knowledge and understanding of forest inventory principles and NS forest management practices
  • Training and/or experience in project management with an understanding of risk management, cost management, planning and forecasting and drafting/proofing technical documents.
  • Working knowledge of data management systems including database software, data analysis, file management, design and planning, and data integrity
  • Experience and understanding of ESRI products (including ArcPro, ArcOnline, Survey123) and their workflows.
  • General understanding of modern programing language (such as C# or Visual Basic) and python scripting language.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and a diplomatic approach
