The Municipality of Chatham-Kent is accepting applications for GIS Field Data Collector Student for the summer of 2024. These positions will start approximately May 1, 2024, for a period up to August 30, 2024.

Job description

As a GIS Field Data Collector Student within the Asset & Quality Management Division, you will play a vital role in supporting the effective management of infrastructure assets and ensuring quality control of spatial data. Your responsibilities will involve utilizing geographic information systems (GIS) technology to create, analyze, and manage spatial data related to various assets. You will collaborate with internal teams and provide valuable expertise to optimize asset management processes.

Essential responsibilities

  • Demonstrate Chatham-Kent\'s core values and competencies
  • Conduct field data collection using GIS tool and equipment
  • Verify and update geographic information through on-site surveys
  • Collaborate with team members to ensure data accuracy and consistency
  • Maintain and troubleshoot GIS field equipment
  • Compile, organize, and analyze collected data for accuracy and completeness
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of GIS databases and schemas
  • Follow established protocols for safe and efficient field data collection
  • Provide support in creating maps and visualizations based on collected data
  • Communicate effectively with project stakeholders and team members
Essential qualifications
  • Preference will be given to students currently enrolled in a related post-secondary program in environmental, construction or civil engineering-related field
  • Experience using GPS and other field data-collecting equipment
  • Familiarity with ArcGIS, Outlook, and Access database applications
  • Experience with Field Maps, ArcGIS Online and Collector is a plus
  • Ability to collect spatial and attribute information on Municipal and PUC assets throughout the municipality using GPS data collection equipment
  • All students will be required to complete their Health & Safety and other on-line mandatory training on or before their first day of employment
Other qualifications
  • Previous co-op student experience in an engineering environment an asset
  • ESRI ArcGIS Desktop Entry Certification would be an asset
Work Environment

This position will work both indoors and outdoors.

Hours of Work

This position will work weekday hours.

COVID-19 Vaccination

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent no longer requires a COVID-19 vaccination as a condition of employment. Although it is not mandatory to be vaccinated, it is highly encouraged.

Driver\'s licence/vehicle requirements

Because of the responsibilities, this position requires the successful candidate to have a valid class G or G2 Ontario driver\'s licence; a driver\'s abstract will be conducted by the Municipality of Chatham-Kent. An acceptable driver\'s abstract will: be an original document and current (within the previous thirty (30) days); have no more than four (4) demerit points; have no more than two (2) convictions for the same offence; have no criminal code convictions; have no \'non-medical or administrative\' license suspension in the preceding three (3) years; because this position may be required to drive their own vehicle, a reliable vehicle is also required.

Essential physical and/or safety requirements
  • Physical coordination and dexterity to use survey equipment, etc.
  • Testing equipment used to troubleshoot systems; manual dexterity to operate computers and equipment such as locator wand, etc.
  • Attention to detail for short periods of time when taking readings; ability to shift focus quickly in response to emergencies or other priorities in the workplace; maintaining focus on multiple tasks with varying priorities, deadlines, and demands
  • Physical strength to manipulate, move and reposition equipment; regular lifting of materials and equipment weighing 4 to 9 kg and occasional lifting of equipment up to 34 kg; frequent standing for prolonged periods of time; working in confined spaces
  • Frequent exposure to loud noises from equipment; working outdoors in excessively cold, hot or adverse weather conditions; working with hazardous chemicals
