The Geotechnical Engineer at SYSTRA Canada is responsible for providing geotechnical engineering services related to the construction of railways, roads and other structures. They are responsible for performing geotechnical investigations, analysis, design, verification and proposing geotechnical solutions for design and construction, depending on the geographic and geological context of the project. Given the variety and scope of projects handled by SYSTRA, they must be able to work in concert with engineers from different disciplines to seek optimal industry-recognized solutions or innovative solutions where appropriate. They must provide assistance and support for all infrastructure projects carried out by the company throughout the world.

Role and responsibilities

  • Prepare standard specifications, design criteria, reports and geotechnical recommendations for design and construction.
  • Carry out analysis and technical advisory services for feasibility studies and deailed design of railway earthwork projects across Canada and globally.
  • Establish a program for soil characterization, evaluate geological and subsurface conditions for embankment design.
  • Perform settlement calculations, slope stability analysis, seepage analysis and stress and strain analysis.
  • Plan, conduct and supervise geotechnical site investigation.
  • Design of shallow and deep foundations.
  • Design of MSE retaining walls.
  • Seismic and liquefaction potential assessment.
  • Design and sizing of roadway pavement bodies and railroad track sizing.
  • Work with other SYSTRA Canada engineering disciplines to provide services to existing and potential clients, and actively participate in local, regional and global collaborative opportunities.
  • Prepare proposals, budgets and schedules.
Qualifications

Education: Bachelor\'s degree in Civil Engineering required; Master\'s degree with Geotechnical focus preferred

Years of experience: 5 to 10 years of geotechnical engineering practical experience in design and construction

Technical competencies:
  • Professional Engineering License in Ontario and/or Quebec.
  • Experience in Permafrost would be an asset.
  • Experience in railway and highway embankments would be an asset.
  • Ability to maintain positive professional relationships with colleagues, clients, suppliers, contractors, consultants and external agencies.
Personal & soft skills:
  • Strong leadership skills.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Fluency in French (spoken, read and written).
  • Fluency in English (spoken, read and written), due to the projects and clients specific to the position.
  • Strong safety behavior
