About Us

The Department of Natural Resources and Renewables manages and promotes energy and mineral resources to achieve optimum economic, social, and environmental value from these sectors. The Subsurface Energy Development Branch of the Department provides leadership, strategic direction, research, and innovation for building subsurface energy regimes in onshore and offshore Nova Scotia. The Subsurface Energy Branch responsibilities include establishing resource and economic potential for development while ensuring responsible resource stewardship. The Department manages these resources through legislation, regulations, market assessments, and cross-jurisdiction relationships for energy development.

About Our Opportunity

The Geoscientist is generally responsible for basin, petroleum, and subsurface geological models of well, seismic, migration and storage data for use in de-risking subsurface resources in onshore and offshore Nova Scotia. Practical applications of the Geoscientist\xe2\x80\x99s technical work will include evaluations of hydrocarbon, carbon sequestration, geothermal, underground energy storage, and future subsurface energy resources. The Geoscientist will also perform technical integration of geology and planning data to support natural hazard and marine environmental geoscience for energy infrastructure development in offshore Nova Scotia that is anticipated for future offshore wind and hydrogen production. The Geoscientist 3 role is a junior geoscience position with the Subsurface Energy Development branch. The successful candidate will work closely with and provide support to senior technical and management staff.

The Geoscientist will have demonstrated experience and skills using geographic information systems (GIS) and geological analysis software and workflows to build professional geotechnical products, reports and presentations. Geographic and geological data processing tasks will include: (1) geospatial data compilation, curation, and analysis, (2) interpretation and integration of multi-layered geotechnical data for maps, atlases, publications, presentations, and (3) communicating results to government, industry, academia, and the public.

Primary Accountabilities

The position is primarily responsible for:

  • Basin, petroleum, and subsurface geological analysis of physical core, well description and petrophysical log data, seismic data and interpretation, and hydrocarbon migration data for use in de-risking subsurface energy resources.
  • Stratigraphic, basin, and petroleum systems models using industry standard software and workflows.
  • Geotechnical analysis of shallow offshore geology using marine seismic, sonar and multibeam data to de-risk natural hazards and energy infrastructure deployment.
  • Geographic Information Management -- including curation and quality assurance -- of complex geological data sets, models, and derivative products for the purposes of energy geoscience information sharing, map-making and research and investment decision supports,
  • Technical report preparation, writing, and publication of energy geoscience including presentations at geotechnical meetings, conferences, workshops and seminars.
  • Provision of scientific and technical expertise to staff, management, executive leaders at the deputy to ministerial levels, industry, academia, stakeholders and the public.

  • Multiple years of experience in GIS data management and geological data processing using ESRI ArcGIS/ArcPro or an equivalent GIS software suite.
  • Experience in shallow and deep marine seismic mapping and analysis.
  • Experience presenting complex geoscience to technical and executive stakeholders to support stewardship, planning, implementation, and regulatory oversight of resource exploration or production programs, and as well as, for sharing and promoting subsurface energy resource opportunities to investment communities.
