The UBC CDC, located at the BCCDC, is hiring a Genomic Analyst to support pathogen genomics research projects in a One Health context. Working with an interdisciplinary team of microbiologists, scientists, epidemiologists, veterinarians and technicians at BCCDC and Animal Health Centre (AHC), the Genomics Specialist supports a wide scope of genomics needs. This includes, but is not limited to, overseeing wet laboratory method development and building analytic approaches, including pipeline development and deployment, data integration and phylogenetic analyses. The Genomic Specialist is also responsible for investigating, analyzing, proposing and implementing solutions based on best practices and novel developments in genomic methods and analytic solutions. Additional responsibilities include liaising with external and internal project team members, drafting manuscripts and routine reporting to project funders. The Genomic Analyst works as a team player, collaborating and building relationships with medical, clinical and scientific staff as well as with national and international collaborators. This position is grant-funded with a possibility of extension.Organizational Status
The Genomics Specialist will report directly to the study Principal Investigators at BCCDC and AHC overseeing the One Health projects. They will work collaboratively with other research team members, including senior scientists, research assistants, graduate student trainees, and other research personnel.Work Performed

  • Provide wet lab and analytic support for multiple pathogen genomic studies and projects
  • Responsible for developing, optimizing and troubleshooting wetlab genomics methods
  • Responsible for developing and running bioinformatic and phylogenetic pipelines
  • Contributes to the development of new programs by conducting literature reviews, developing methodologies, procuring necessary materials, and managing program implementation.
  • Supports training and mentorship of junior staff
  • Integrate genomic data and metadata for downstream analyses
  • Participate in research meetings to discuss and/or advise on study and protocol development
  • Contribute to preparation of manuscripts and grants
  • Interact with external stakeholders, partners and granting agencies; provide assistance in project coordination, data sharing and achieving project milestones
  • Ensures adherence to standards for security, access and storage and management of large health administrative datasets
  • Follows best practices for maintaining data in a secure environment
Consequence of Error/JudgementThe Genomics Specialist is required to conduct all activities in an ethical manner. All procedures or data recorded must be accurate and must accurately reflect the work performed. All activities are accountable to the PIs. As data from this effort will be made widely available to a range of data users for surveillance, epidemiological, and policy research, consequences of error could result in erroneous information with negative implications for all of these activities. Confidentiality of highly personal health information and identifiers present in datasets must be protected at all costs.Supervision ReceivedThe position will report to the PIs and will work closely with other scientific and veterinary staff.Supervision GivenThe Genomics Specialist will serve a critical role in both the research project and overall strategy of the BCCDC. The Genomics Specialist will be responsible for supervising other data management and research team personnel as required.Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of three years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.- Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one\xe2\x80\x99s own- Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one\xe2\x80\x99s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusionPreferred Qualifications
  • MSc degree in Molecular Biology, Microbiology, or Genetics preferred
  • Experience in validation of molecular and genomics assays
  • Experience with sequence data analysis and proficiency in at least one modern computer languages (i.e. Python (preferred), R, Java, Perl, Shell)
  • Excellent ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with others within a team environment, to accept
  • Demonstrated ability to efficiently organize work assignments and establish priorities
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Organizational, leadership and interpersonal skills also essential
