Shared Health leads the planning and coordinates the integration of patient-centred clinical and preventive health services across Manitoba. Position Overview

  • Performs routine radiological examinations on patients, using a variety of stationary and mobile equipment to produce satisfactory images to diagnose, evaluate and record the condition and progress of treatment by:
  • preparing and positioning the patient for proper projection, placing film markers, immobilizing with pads, sand bags, or other devices and placing proper right or left body identification;
  • selecting appropriate exposure factors for the area to be examined with regard to safety factors for patients and equipment and the production of a diagnostic film;
  • instructing patients to secure the utmost cooperation and protecting patient from excess radiation by collimation;
  • checking finished images to be certain that area under examination is properly demonstrated;
  • will be available to be on "stand-by" when scheduled, to be "called back" to the Centre for radiological examinations.
  • Carries out difficult radiological examinations using fluoroscopic procedures to record patient condition by:
  • calmly and slowly giving clear instructions enabling patient understanding and cooperation; preparing Barium to be used; preparing fluoro/TV and DVD recording set up for video fluoroscopic swallowing examinations. positioning patient and arranging protective devices to protect patient and others from excessive radiation;
  • Performs radiological examinations on the wards using mobile equipment to determine patient condition, progress of treatment by:
  • taking mobile unit, cassettes and accessories to the location dressing according to location, masks and gowns as required, as well as protective clothing; selecting factors to suit the examination ,equipment and location to obtain a diagnostic image; recording technical factors on patient file for future reference; observing caution, contamination of sterile fields, contact with infectious diseases, or interference with treatment.
  • Supervises nurses, orderlies, and messengers transporting patients, and assisting with radiological examinations of helpless or difficult patients.
  • Performs quality control and other procedures, documenting results for Quality Assurance programs by: performing quality control procedures on x-ray machines; Generator; milliamperage and autotransformer; timer testing using penetometer stepwedge and spinning top; quality control procedures on x-ray machines; Generator; milliamperage and autotransformer and timer testing using penetometer stepwedge and spinning top; light congruency test; performing visual and manual quality control checks annually.
  • Performs other related duties by:
  • assuming responsib ility for functions of the department when asked to do so during the absence of the Charge Technologist;
  • perform EKGs as requested placing "CODE BLUE" calls when necessary;
  • receives patients, prepares files and performs general office/reception duties as necessary;
  • examining and cleaning of the film screens and cassettes semi-annually;
  • checking lead gloves for radiation leaks annually;
  • conducting Workplace Health and Safety tours of the Radiology/EGG Department and documenting results;
  • reviewing of "patient care" questionnaire for Diagnostic Services at the completion of periodic surveys;
  • helping Charge Technologist with various assignments when asked to do so;
  • adhering to all rules, regulations and policies of the department;
  • informing House Medical Officer or ward, when concerned about findings on x-ray films that are of immediate importance;
  • inputs data onto compute r and sends via modem for monthly billing purposes.
Experience
  • A minimum of 2-3 years experience is preferred.
Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)
  • Completion of secondary schooling and post-secondary schooling leading to registration as a Radiology Technologist with the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists.
Certification/Licensure/Registration
  • Successful completion of an accredited Medical Imaging Technology Program, eligible for registration with the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (C.A.M.R.T.) and registration with the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (C.A.M.R.T.) within three months of hire.
Qualifications and Skills
  • Proficiency in the English language is essential.
  • Knowledge and ability sufficient to perform the duties of the position normally obtained through post-secondary school training at an accredited school of radiography and some on-the-job experience.
  • Knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathology.
  • Thorough knowledge of the techniques of radiology.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Ability to operate x-ray equipment to produce images of the required diagnostic quality in accordance with standard methods and special instruction, using a variety of stationary and mobile x-ray and associated equipment.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with patients, nurses, all medical and support staff.
  • Ability to perform related duties such as selecting and mixing of chemicals used in film processing .
Physical Requirements
  • Knowledge of WHMIS regulation and department specific procedures regarding hazardous material within radiology area.
