JOB SUMMARY


The mandate of Facility Operations is to operate and maintain all City facilities and City-managed buildings, which represents approximately 900 buildings and includes police, fire, libraries, child care, paramedic posts, recreation, culture, public works, City Hall and other administrative buildings, long-term care facilities, and facility outdoor property. The Facility Operations units deliver facility management and maintenance services within assigned geographic and/or specialty areas. You are responsible for both rough and finished carpentry activities pertaining to the maintenance, construction and repair of structures and other wood, concrete and metal components as well as general carpentry work including lay out, construction, fastenings, repair, additions and assembly for temporary and permanent buildings and wooden furniture and fixtures.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE


Completion of General Carpenter apprenticeship program of 7200 hours Minimum of 5 years of related experience after certification

CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENCES



Valid Ontario Certificate of Qualification as General Carpenter 403A
Valid Ontario unrestricted DZ class driver?s licence (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerit points accumulated
Hoisting and Rigging training certificate is an asset
Must obtain Registered Playground Practitioner with Ontario Parks Association (OPA) within the timeframe determined by the employer
Must complete all required on-the-job training/certifications (e.g. WHMIS, fall arrest, confined space entry, etc.) within the timeframe determined by the employer.

KNOWLEDGE


  • Ontario Occupational Health & Safety Act

  • Knowledge of the lumber and plywood grading system
  • Knowledge of multiple types of fasteners and guidelines for using them
  • Thorough knowledge of the Ontario Building Code
  • Building construction, maintenance and alteration procedures
  • Woodworking repair and cabinet-making procedures
  • Structural steel installation
  • Concrete forming, brick and cement block construction methods
  • Must possess the training, experience and knowledge to organize the work and performance of an apprentice
  • Must be familiar with all applicable health and safety legislation, have knowledge of any potential or actual danger to health or safety in the work place, and have knowledge of appropriate actions to be taken in order to ensure the health and safety of staff in accordance with applicable legislation and City policies and procedures


COMPETENCIES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES


  • Perform general carpentry and industrial woodworking procedures in a correct and professional manner
  • Capable of acting as project supervisor with complete job responsibility and accountability for production, from start to finish
  • Responsible for preparing job specifications, acquiring quotes and coordinating all related trades on projects
  • Must be able to manage financial transactions and provide all related paperwork
  • Mathematical and analytical skills necessary to do material estimates
  • Use and maintain all trade tools correctly, efficiently and safely
  • Read and interpret blue prints
  • Capable of creating material take-offs from blueprints and provide budget estimates on proposed projects
  • Create specifications for pricing by sub-contractors
  • Supervise subordinates as required.
  • Understand written and verbal instructions
  • Able to complete and fulfill paperwork for personal time sheets in a timely manner
  • Work independently or with little supervision
  • Reliable, thorough and self-motivated
  • Conscientiousness is a must as the incumbent will be working in all facilities, including police, daycare and art gallery often responsible for securing the property as well as containing limit of damages
  • Adept at establishing relationships with all parties involved in the construction process that facilitates harmonious working relationships during project
  • Tact, discretion and diplomacy
  • Facilitates prompt resolution of problems and conflicts as they occur
  • Capable of carrying over 50 lbs
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
  • Police Record Check: The successful candidate will be required to complete a Criminal Records and Judicial Matters Check with the Police Services detachment in their jurisdiction to the City of Ottawa?s satisfaction.; Police record checks completed by a third-party company will not be accepted.
  • Driver?s License Requirement: A valid Ontario unrestricted G class driver?s license (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerit points accumulated; A valid Ontario unrestricted DZ class driver?s license (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerit points accumulated
  • You may initially be paid 95% of your starting rate of pay, in accordance with the collective agreement.
