is critical in promoting food sovereignty through reduction of reliance on external food sources while enhancing and preserving traditional knowledge by integrating community-based education with small-scale greenhouse operations.
The position will provide training, mentorship, and technical support for residents and community and assist with developing a long-term operational plan and stability.
Responsibilities
Community-based Education:
deliver community-based education on food sovereignty, horticulture, sustainable gardening and traditional plant knowledge through at least six (6) workshops and/or community-wide information sessions. Topics may include soil preparation, raised bed building, seed starting, traditional medicines and plants, and food preservation.
Coaching Support:
offer one-on-one consultations for households starting gardens or raised beds. Provide support, training, and education through guidance and external resources.
Data and Seed Management:
identify, develop, and oversee a tool library management and seed bank storage system.
Greenhouse Maintenance:
prepare a small-scale greenhouse for seasonal planting and conduct regular greenhouse maintenance, soil testing, and education planning. Assistance required in moving greenhouse operations to shop facility at Jack Pine Place.
Facilitation of Community Garden Days:
develop, coordinate and assist in the facilitation of two (2) Community Garden Days that will include harvest events, activities, and demonstrations for all ages. Engage and liaise with residents, local schools, community agencies, resource/service providers, government agencies, local businesses to encourage full participation and successful execution of events.
Source/Order Supplies:
source/order seeds, soil, compost, starter pots, trays, and fertilizers, small tools and equipment under a prescribed budget.
Building Relationships:
expand partnerships with Indigenous sovereignty networks for additional resources and funding opportunities.
Monitoring and Reporting:
create a database of tracking outputs and assist in the preparation of reports outlining successes and measured outcomes to meet scheduled reporting requirements. Conduct annual evaluations to track progress, production, impact, budget, and incurred operational costs.
Qualifications and Skills
A minimum of three (3) years of progressive employment or demonstrated experience working in the horticulture field and/or sustainable gardening;
Knowledge of traditional plants and medicines is required;
Strong customer service skills with proven competence to build and effectively manage interpersonal relationships are essential for facilitation and building rapport with community members;
Excellent presentation and facilitation skills;
Strong communication and report writing skills;
Ability to work independently as a self-directed professional as well as work in a team environment;
Ability to speak Cree is considered a desired asset;
Incumbents may be asked to complete a criminal record check and are expected to conduct themselves ethically and with a high degree of respect for others; and
A class 5 driver's license is preferred but not required. All work-related travel expenses will be reimbursed in accordance with the Society's policy.

Position Type/Hours
This is a part-time contract position, working sixteen (16) hours per week for a 100-week term. The regular hours of operation are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. CRDAC will work with the incumbent to develop a fixed schedule with some flexibility required to accommodate evenings, as necessary. This position is required to work from Conklin.
