JOB SUMMARY



The Transit Fleet and Facilities Maintenance branch provides safe, reliable, efficient, timely and cost-effective transit vehicle maintenance services to support federally regulated transit services within the City. The work involves planning, developing, managing, implementing, coordinating and monitoring transit vehicle maintenance activities; materials management and warranty activities; and engineering and technical support activities for vehicle maintenance, including reliability and quality process analysis.
You are responsible for production planning, scheduling and logistics for the maintenance and service work for Transit Fleet vehicles. Within established procedures and guidelines, you authorize overtime, direct and supervise staff including Working Supervisors. You provide direction in order to solve technical problems and identify diagnostic procedures for complex issues and coordinates maintenance responses to reported-in service defects.
You are responsible for general safety, hoist inspections, problem solving and overall quality and timeliness of the repair, maintenance, cleaning and servicing operations in Transit Fleet garages, including:
  • daily cleaning and servicing, preventive maintenance, unplanned work, general and specialized repairs to provide clean, well-maintained, safe and reliable vehicles
  • monitoring safety recertification various equipment in the non-revenue department
  • transit vehicle body maintenance, structural repair, and modification, painting and components (i.e. seats, destination signs, mirrors, and fare box) maintenance and repair
  • accident investigation as required.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE



Completion of a journeyman\'s certificate of qualification as a Truck and Coach Technician (310T) and as an Automotive Service Technician (310S)
Minimum of 5 years of experience as a journeyperson tradesperson, following attainment of trade certification, exposed to the full range of activities in a bus maintenance operation, with increasingly responsible work with all critical bus systems.
For at least 2 of the 5 years, must have increasingly responsible work and supervisory experience, and demonstrated the capability for supervising other employees.

CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENCES



Must obtain Standard First Aid, CPR and/or AED certificates within the time frame determined by the employer
Valid Ontario unrestricted CZ class driver\xe2\x80\x99s licence (or provincial equivalent) is an asset
Valid Ontario Certificate of Qualification as Truck and Coach Technician 310T and Automotive Service Technician 310S

KNOWLEDGE


  • City, Department and Branch policies and procedures affecting shop and repair operations
  • Collective agreement covering ATU279 employees and the principles of supervision in a unionized environment
  • Extensive technical knowledge of all bus models in use in the Transit fleet
  • Extensive technical knowledge of critical systems, such as: engine and transmission, axles and suspension, air conditioning, electrical systems, air brake systems, body and frame
  • Knowledge of weight classification for snow plow equipment, weight restrictions
  • Knowledge of Generators, Fork lift, Genie lift legislation to maintain and operate equipment
  • Extensive knowledge of the standard methods, tools, and equipment used in the automotive repair trades
  • Working knowledge of building support systems
  • Technical knowledge of diagnostics and equipment
  • Enhanced level of knowledge of the Highway Traffic Act
  • Knowledge to use, operate and maintain hand tools and power tools, diagnostic and test equipment
  • Knowledge of computerized Maintenance Management Information Systems and MS Office
  • Knowledge of job planning and parts/materials requisitioning/ warranty processing
  • Safe work practices of the trades
  • Must be familiar with all applicable health and safety legislation, have knowledge of any potential or actual danger to health or safety in the work place, and have knowledge of appropriate actions to be taken in order to ensure the health and safety of staff in accordance with applicable legislation and City policies and procedures.

Desirable Qualifications:
  • Supervisor/Manager Health and Safety Training-Federally Regulated
  • Education/training in supervisory skills

  • Driver\xe2\x80\x99s License Requirement: A valid Ontario unrestricted G class driver\xe2\x80\x99s license (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerit points accumulated
