Job Description

Good Shepherd Ministries provides food, shelter, clothing, medical care, housing services, and pre-and-post addiction treatment services for people struggling with poverty and homelessness.

In its work, Good Shepherd Ministries strives to promote and protect human dignity. Services are offered in a spirit of compassion, trust, acceptance, and respect.

Services are provided free of charge and without distinction to anyone in need. Services are available 365 days a year.

We are currently accepting application for two Full-Time Evening Support Worker positions.

Role Summary:



Reporting to the Manager, DARE Program, the Evening Support Worker enhances the dignity and quality of life of our clients through his/her assumed responsibility for delivering support, housekeeping, and safety services to clients.

Responsibilities for this position includes the following:

To carry out all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Mission, Vision, and Values of Good Shepherd Ministries. To provide service in a dignified, respectful and hospital manner that reflects the Mission, Vision and Values of Good Shepherd Ministries and which integrates non-discrimination/anti-oppression/anti-racism frameworks. To observe all health and safety rules and regulations and to work in a manner that minimizes risk to yourself, clients, co-workers and others as well as to the property of the Good Shepherd Ministries. To perform your job responsibilities in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Policies and the Occupational Health and Safety Act. To comply with the established rules of operation, procedures, policies and code of conduct. To comply with work scheduling and attendance requirements according to policy and practices. To assist clients with questions or queries. To prepare and process registration data for each client using City of Toronto's Shelter Management Information System (SMIS). To cover the reception desk, answering telephone calls and other enquiries. To accept and record donations of food, clothing or monetary gifts from benefactors. To pick up food and clothing donations as directed. To document client information that may be needed by other departments or the oncoming shift. To make referrals to other agencies as appropriate, and provide/arrange transportation for clients to other agencies. To restock dormitory supplies, i.e. bedding, towels and personal hygiene products as necessary. To provide food to clients as directed, especially ensure 7:00 p.m. snack set up and monitor dining room during snack time. To supervise both dormitories and carry out headcounts to ensure an exact record of occupancy. To monitor client/building safety and security. To take necessary action in the event of a fire, medical or physical emergency and, if necessary, inform "On Call" co-workers. To follow all Health and Safety procedures established by management. To maintain the confidentiality and ethical standards of Good Shepherd Ministries at all times. To perform any other related task that may from time to time be assigned by the Manager, DARE Program or designate.

Skill, Nature and Scope include:



Actively practices the Mission, Vision, and Values of Good Shepherd Ministries. Diploma or equivalent in social services. A minimum of (2) years of experience working in a shelter is required. Demonstrated clerical and administrative skills acquired through equivalent work related experience. Excellent written communication skills to produce routine memos, correspondence and reports. The ability to prioritize work overload is essential. CPR First Aid Certificate acquired through a recognized course. An ability to appreciate the complexity and demands of 'hard to serve' individuals from diverse backgrounds. Excellent written communication and interpersonal skills to maintain team work with The ability to communicate effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds. Legally eligible to work in Canada.
