This position provides required sanitation, cleaning, and custodial service to custodial standards ensuring the building environments are healthy and comfortable.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Custodial:

  • Cleans, sanitizes, sweeps, dusts, mops, washes, vacuums, polishes, and waxes floors.
  • Cleans windows, mirrors, woodwork, furniture, equipment, and other surfaces.
  • Cleans offices, kitchens, washrooms and other rooms.
  • Refills hygiene items.
  • Empties trash and recycling bins and dispose of in proper containers.
  • Spot cleans carpets and performs general carpet cleaning, as required.
  • Remove snow from all pedestrian walkways and exit doors.
  • Lawn maintenance as required.
  • Check doors and windows to ensure building security.
  • Performs more extensive cleaning, carpet cleaning, stripping and waxing floors, and light maintenance during non-peak programming periods.
  • Organizes and maintains janitorial supplies.
  • Perform general repairs which do not require certification, such as patching, painting, plumbing, replacing light bulbs etc.
  • Lifts and moves furniture as requested, setting up and tearing down for social events.
  • Ensure the general upkeep of external property, keeping sidewalks and entrances clear of snow and ice, including salting, litter pick up and up-keep of storage shed.
  • Complies with all prescribed sanitation and building disinfecting protocols.
Health and Safety
  • Monitor and maintain mixed cleaner bottles for custodial use. Ensure that all bottles contain WHMIS compliant labeling.
  • Monitor and maintain SDS\'s, ensuring all SDS\'s are WHMIS compliant.
  • Perform monthly workplace health & safety inspections.
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army\'s health and safety policies and procedures.
Perform other duties as required.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • This is a permanent full-time position based 35 hours per week
  • Flexibility in scheduling is required
  • The incumbent is required to lift/move up to 40 pounds
  • The incumbent\'s work environment is typically in the entire facility and designated properties.
  • The performance of the job requires operating industrial cleaning equipment and tools, mopping/sweeping, bending/twisting/lifting, occasional ladder work and fine motor skills.
  • The performance of the job requires moderate to high attention when handling hazardous chemicals and using non-motorized/general cleaning equipment.
  • Handles garbage.
  • Odours, exposure to toxic chemicals, electrical hazards, and infectious diseases.
  • Works in various weather conditions when working outdoors.
  • Work will require the travel between four locations: Owen Sound Community Church, Owen Sound Thrift Store, Port Elgin Thrift Store and Saugeen Shores Community & Family Services (i.e. semi-annual stripping/waxing of floors and carpet cleaning as necessary).
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
  • High School Diploma or equivalency
EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE:
  • Minimum two-years prior related experience including life skills, custodial, and general familiarity with cleaning and maintenance procedures and equipment.
  • Knowledge of Health & Safety Standards.
  • Current WHMIS certificate or willingness to obtain.
  • Valid Ontario Class \xe2\x80\x9cG\xe2\x80\x9d Driver\'s License and a current copy of a Driver\'s abstract for review and verification that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required.

  • Exhibit good listening and interpersonal skills, have strong oral/written communication skills.
  • Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check screening.
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
