Freelance to start, potentially transitioning to part or full-time employment. Description: B2B news publisher, Squall Inc. is seeking freelance business reporters to write for a busy, growing, online news service. Squall provides news, information and commentary about issues pertaining to Canadian business published on a sector-by-sector basis. Squall is headquartered in Ottawa. It operates virtually with an entirely remote workforce and by engaging freelance reporters across the country. Squall\xe2\x80\x99s publications include the Real Estate News Exchange (RENX.ca), Sustainable Biz Canada (SustainableBiz.ca) and RENX Homes (RENXHomes.ca). Range of possible duties and responsibilities: Write 1 \xe2\x80\x93 5 news stories per week. Report and write business news stories assigned by a Squall editor. Pitch, write and report original, compelling, and breaking stories. Deliver high quality, fact-checked, \xe2\x80\x98publish-ready\xe2\x80\x99 copy with appropriate images. Attend events and conferences to provide news reporting for Squall.
Availability during business hours, on a timely basis to pursue writing assignments. Maintain Squall\xe2\x80\x99s reputation as a source of excellent, original business reporting. Key competencies: Solid news judgment, superior research, and reporting skills. Excellent writing and editing skills with knowledge of Canadian Press style conventions. Clear and concise communicator who can conduct interviews with senior executives. Ability to manage and manipulate digital images suitable for publication. Adept at building and maintaining relationships with sources. Deadline driven with an enthusiasm for business news. Keen sense of integrity and high journalistic standards. Qualifications: 10+ years business news reporting experience. Degree or diploma in journalism or a related field, including English or communications. Must be a Canadian citizen who has lived in a Canadian urban setting for an extended period. Technical proficiency, with hands-on experience using a full cross section of online publishing software and social media platforms. A track record of remote work with suitable home office and internet connection. A proven track record of business reporting is an absolute requirement. Ideally experience reporting about Canadian commercial and residential real estate industries, the sustainable building sector and issues concerned with sustainable business in Canada is preferred.
