Free Play for Kids is seeking a Head Coach/Coordinator to join our Free to Play program on a part-time basis. If you excel at engaging with children and possess exceptional interpersonal skills, we want you on our team.
As a Head Coach/Coordinator, you will be the lead coach at one of the Free to Play schools in Maskwaciz (Indigenous community) and will also have dedicated time for administrative responsibilities such as managing busing logistics, potentially supporting facility bookings, and connecting with guardians/caregivers.
A successful candidate will go beyond traditional coaching methods by incorporating a holistic approach to development, including physical literacy, social-emotional learning, and nutritional literacy. This role is ideal for individuals with a strong background in sports who are eager to be inspiring leaders and mentors.
Education & Qualifications
Working towards or completed, a degree or diploma in Physical Education, Sport and Recreation, Kinesiology, Education, Sociology, Psychology, Early Childhood Education, or equivalent from a recognized post-secondary institution
Minimum 2 years' experience working with youth such as coaching, social work, in-school services, after-school programs, day homes, or summer camps
Experience managing or leading a team
Familiarity with Indigenous cultural practices and beliefs
Standard First Aid Certification and CPR training or ability to obtain quickly
Clear, up-to-date Criminal and Vulnerable Sector Check
Valid driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle (mandatory), and comfortable commuting to schools in Maskwacis (Indigenous community)
Experience playing a variety of sports is considered a major asset
Proficient with Amilia, Connecteams, Google Suite, and related applications is considered a major asset
Key Responsibilities
Programming Tasks (70-75% of the role):
Coach and lead the execution of the curriculum and lesson plans
Supervise all children in the session, ensuring that the Rule of Two is maintained at all times
Deliver weekly food sessions based on nutritional literacy
Maintain attendance lists to ensure proper check-ins and check-outs are conducted each day
Administrative & Coordination Tasks (15-20% of the role):
Manage busing logistics
Support facility bookings, as required
Build and maintain strong relationships with guardians/caregivers
Provide updates to the Regional Manager regarding schedules, special events, weekly updates, and follow-up on incidents and behavior challenges
Stay current with policies and procedures, ensuring proper response to emergencies and follow-up of incidents
Training & Development Tasks (5-10% of the role):
Participate in weekly curriculum meetings and review lesson plans
Complete additional training and certifications as required through the Free Play training program (Sport to Life, Etc.)

Position Conditions
Compensation is $27-$30/hour, depending on experience
Access to consistent transportation, as the school will be outside of the Edmonton region
Ability to travel a long distance to and from the school site
This is a part-time paid position of approximately 10-15 hours per week
Hours of work are determined by the program schedule and are typically:
Monday - Friday: 1:30 - 5:30 pm
Work is primarily performed in schools and recreation settings, but may vary depending on the project
