Fpga Engineer

St. Catharines, ON, CA, Canada

Job Description

Bornea Dynamics is an innovative, Canadian-owned space and defence contractor focused on delivering cutting-edge solutions in sensor systems, robotics, data processing, and data exploitation to Canada, the UK, and NATO Allies. We operate in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment, supporting customers in defence, space, law enforcement, and public safety. Our work spans critical technology areas including electronic warfare, satellite systems, autonomous robotics, and next-generation signal intelligence.

We are seeking a skilled FPGA Engineer to join our team and contribute to the design, implementation, and integration of high-performance digital systems for software-defined radio (SDR), radar platforms, and real-time signal processing applications.

As an FPGA Engineer, you will play a central role in developing and delivering Verilog/HDL-based solutions for Bornea's advanced sensing and communication systems. You will work closely with RF, embedded software, and systems teams to define, prototype, and deploy real-time digital signal processing pipelines for SDR and radar payloads -- both terrestrial and space-based.

Key Responsibilities

Design, implement, and verify HDL (VHDL or Verilog/SystemVerilog) targeting Xilinx or Intel FPGAs. Develop high-throughput, low-latency signal processing architectures (e.g., filtering, FFT, decimation, modulation). Create reusable IP cores and integrate with vendor-provided or open-source modules. Interface with RF front-ends, ADC/DACs, embedded processors (e.g., Zynq, RFSoC), and external control logic. Perform lab-based bring-up, debug, and signal validation using tools such as oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, and SDR platforms. Optimize for power, timing, and resource usage under strict performance and form factor constraints. Support adaptation of FPGA designs across different mission contexts (ground, airborne, or space systems). Collaborate in cross-functional teams including software, hardware, and systems engineers. Support the preparation of technical documentation, test plans, and design reviews.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field. 3+ years of experience in FPGA development for DSP, SDR, or radar systems. Proficiency in VHDL or Verilog, with hands-on experience in synthesis and implementation tools (e.g., Xilinx Vivado, Intel Quartus). Strong grasp of digital signal processing fundamentals and real-time architecture design. Experience with high-speed interfaces (e.g., JESD204B/C, AXI, LVDS) and embedded SoCs.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with software-defined radio frameworks (e.g., GNU Radio, RFNoC, Redhawk). Prior work on radar signal processing (e.g., pulse-Doppler, FMCW, phased arrays). Familiarity with Zynq, RFSoC, or SoC-FPGA platforms. Competence in scripting languages (Python, Tcl) for automation and test. Understanding of radiation-tolerant or space-qualified digital design considerations is an asset.

Why Join Bornea Dynamics

Be part of an elite engineering team working on mission-critical technologies in defence and space. Exposure to sensitive and high-impact projects with real-world operational value. Flexible work arrangements, including remote/hybrid options. Competitive salary and benefits, plus opportunities for advancement in a growing company. A collaborative, supportive culture that values innovation, independence, and technical excellence.
