Food Scientist

About the Role:
Reporting to the Product Development and Nutrition Manager, the Food Scientist plays a key role in advancing product quality, safety, and nutritional integrity. This position is responsible for evaluating ingredients and supporting the development of extruded pet food products that meet nutrient, functional, and food safety standards. The Food Scientist will collaborate cross-functionally to drive innovation and support internal and external project goals.

What You'll Do:
Provide scientific and technical expertise on: Food chemistry and ingredient functionality, Ingredient processing interactions and analytical methods, and Food safety and regulatory compliance.
Lead internal ingredient approval processes, including documentation, testing, and supplier communication.
Develop and maintain strong relationships with suppliers (i.e., ingredients, packaging), working directly with the Procurement team on technical inquiries, challenges, etc.
Conduct plant trials, product testing (e.g., nutritional analysis, shelf-life, feeding studies), and support new product launches.
Assist in formulating complete and balanced pet food recipes.
Monitor physical and chemical quality of incoming ingredients.
Collaborate with Operations, Quality, and Engineering to troubleshoot extrusion challenges and optimize processes.
Support packaging initiatives to ensure food safety, shelf-life, and sustainability goals.
Work with Sales and Marketing team to support innovation and product positioning.
Stay current with scientific literature and trends in pet food and nutrition.
What You'll Bring:
Bachelor's Degree in Food Science, Animal Science, Nutrition, or related field.
2-5 years of work experience in food science (extrusion experience preferred).
Detail-oriented with excellent project management skills.
Proven ability to work collaboratively across all levels and functions internally and with third parties.
Ability to communicate complex information effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Excellent oral and written communication skills to work effectively with cross-functional teams, clients, and suppliers.
Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel).
