Food Safety Coordinator

Kitchener, ON, CA, Canada

Job Description

About Us

We are an independent, certified living wage employer dedicated to producing premium organic tempeh. Since 2002, we have been producing tempeh, a fermented plant based protein that we make from organic soybeans. Our products are organic, gluten-free, and Non-GMO project verified. We are one of Canada's original tempeh producers, and our tempeh can be found in stores across the country! We are looking for a new team member to grow with us as we take our food safety and quality programs to the next level.

The Opportunity

This is a high-impact FSQA role where you will have direct say in the development and roll out of our BRCGS-compliant food safety and quality management system. We are looking for a proactive and independent FSQA Coordinator to be our hands-on champion of all things food safety. You will report directly to the Operations Director (who leads our FSQA program) and be responsible for the daily maintenance and monitoring of our quality systems. Most excitingly, you will be an instrumental part of implementing the BRCGS standard at our site and will be a key participant in our initial certification audit. If you are someone who loves to take initiative, find solutions, and make a tangible impact, this is the role for you.

What You'll Be Doing

Be a BRCGS Champion:

Actively support the development, implementation, and maintenance of our BRCGS food safety system.

Own the Floor:

Monitor daily production to ensure everyone is adhering to food safety protocols. This is a hands-on role where your presence on the floor is key.

Run Point on QA Tasks:

You'll manage key programs, including supplier approval, raw material specifications, sanitation verification (like pre-op checks and swabbing), and investigating any non-conformances.

Be Audit-Ready:

Help prepare for and participate in all internal, third-party, and regulatory audits (especially our first BRCGS audit!).

Collaborate for Success:

Work closely with our production and maintenance teams to troubleshoot quality issues and provide food safety training to staff.

Support & Report:

Compile quality metrics and reports to support the Operations Director in making key decisions.

What You Bring

A degree or diploma in Food Science, Microbiology, and or FSQA certificate or a related field. 2-3+ years of hands-on FSQA experience in a food manufacturing environment. Strong training and working knowledge of HACCP and BRCGS (or another GFSI standard). A truly proactive mindset: you're a problem-solver who can identify needs, suggest improvements, and find your own work to do. A collaborative spirit: you work well with all departments, from the production floor to senior management. Independence: you are reliable and can manage your daily priorities effectively. Meticulous attention to detail and excellent organizational skills.
