The objective of the Fisheries Coordinator is to effectively manage and oversee the pursuit of communal-commercial; food, social, and ceremonial; and livelihood fisheries. This position also is responsible for ensuring that the fishery is conducted in a manner that sustains fish stocks in the habitat. The position also carries out the mandate of protecting and implementing the Mi'kmaw title and rights to the fisheries.
Duties and Responsibilities
Perform duties related to operation of the Fisheries which includes, but is not limited to:
Developing an operational fishery plan which incorporates goals and targets for the program aligned with the strategic direction of AVFN
Ensure the Captains and crew are in place and trained/experienced to pursue the fishery
Representing the community on issues and initiatives related to fisheries
Facilitating the resolution of any conflicts / issues related to fisheries and convene multi-stakeholder workshops and meetings, as required
Liaising with elders, traditional knowledge holders and other community members to identify issues that are of concern to the community
Meeting regularly with government bodies, industry, First Nation organizations, etc. to share information and identify problem areas, and work towards developing solutions to issues
Arranging field trips with elders, traditional knowledge holders, resource users and community members
Making recommendations to the Fisheries Committee on courses of action to be taken to ensure the integrity of the Fisheries program
Consulting and liaising with other Fisheries resources experts to share information and concerns
Establishing and maintaining effective and positive working relationships with internal and external contacts
Ensuring there is a fleet maintenance and repair program in place and that it is being followed
Monitoring and reviewing the success of the fisheries programs, each year, and identify opportunities to improve the program
Attend various meetings and participate on committees as required
Other duties, training and activities related to the position, as required

Extensive knowledge of fishery issues, allowable catch for various species, policies and legislation affecting First Nations
