First Aid Assistant

Job Description



The First Aid Assistant assists in providing and/or provide emergency first aid as needed, dispenses camper/staff medication, keeps detailed documentation and safeguarding of same. Promotes good hygiene, self-care, and sun sense as well as oversees the health and medical needs of individuals at Scotian Glen Camp and ensure a safe and healthy environment for everyone.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:


Health and Medical Care
  • Inspect health forms of campers prior to their arrival at camp.
  • Notify Camp Director/Camp Staff of medical or behavioral issues of incoming campers.
  • Evaluate and treat minor injuries and illnesses.
  • Responsible for the administration of prescription and over-the-counter medication.
  • Identify health problems serious enough to require a physician?s attention.
  • Follow-up with parents/guardians as required.
  • Assist with Head Lice checks for campers as necessary

Administration
  • Keep accurate documentation of all care and treatment.
  • Maintain adequate medical supplies.
  • Update inventory as necessary.
  • Maintain first aid kits and cabin leader fanny packs.

Camp Operations and Support
  • Give supportive advice to cabin leaders.
  • Assist with cabin inspection for orderliness and cleanliness.
  • Be present at registration to meet campers and review medical information.
  • Notify kitchen of allergies/dietary concerns.
  • Communicate and cooperate with camp staff.
  • Help run arrival and departure days.

CRITICAL RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT Governance Boards and Councils: None Internal: Camp Director, staff, campers External: Government officials (health inspectors, etc.), medical professionals
MANAGERIAL/Technical Leadership RESPONSIBILITY:
  • Reports directly to: Camp Director
  • Direct reports for this position: None but gives oversight to medical needs.

FINANCIAL AND MATERIALS MANAGEMENT:
  • The incumbent does not process any financial transactions with no budget responsibilities.
  • The incumbent will inform the Camp Director of any needed expenditures.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • This is a seasonal contract position based on 40 hours per week.
  • Required to live on-site at Scotian Glen Camp for the duration of the employment contract.
  • The performance of the job requires moderate to high attention when handling hazardous chemicals and using non-motorized/general cleaning equipment.
  • Handles garbage and cleans up human waste and biohazard substances.
  • Odours, exposure to toxic chemicals and infectious diseases.
  • Works in various weather conditions when working outdoors.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:


Education, Qualifications and Certifications:
  • A qualified RN, LPN or nursing student. Also suitable for 2nd year or higher nursing student (Certificate of competence with the licensing body of Nova Scotia).
  • Current Certification in First Aid/CPR.
  • Valid driver?s license.
  • Criminal Police Investigation Check and Abuse Registry Clearance.
Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements
  • At least one year of prior related experience (this can include nursing school).
  • Previous camp experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of Health & Safety Standards.
  • Good computer skills (Word, Excel, Publisher, CampBrain).
