Job Summary

Under supervision of the Risk Reduction Officer, this position performs technical inspection, enforcement, cause and origin investigations.


Duties & Responsibilities

1. Conducts inspections of buildings, structures, and places in an assigned area to identify and locate fire hazards and to ensure compliance with the Fire Department Bylaws, Acts, Codes and other legislation where applicable.
2. Inspects building life safety systems, water protection systems, fire warning systems, fire pumps and other protection systems to ensure compliance with the City Bylaw and National Fire Code of Canada.
3. Issues corrective notices, letters, tickets and orders under the terms of the appropriate legislation and as directed.
4. Supervises the installation and removal of underground tanks in the assigned area.
5. Enters inspection data into the designated software program and electronic filing system.
6. Prepares and provides evidence, appears in court and appeal hearings.
7. Reviews and interprets technical reports and plans to ensure fire protection systems comply with the required Codes and Standards.
8. Reviews and establishes building occupant loads.
9. Provides training and education to internal and external stakeholders, as required.
10. Performs fire investigations as assigned.
11. Performs other related duties as assigned.


Qualifications

  • Grade 12 or equivalent.
  • Four years\xe2\x80\x99 experience in the enforcement of bylaws and codes or with a fire department.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with experience in the area of fire prevention and inspection and who meet the NFPA 1031 Fire Inspector Level I & II Professional Qualifications Standard and with experience in the area of fire investigation and who meet the NFPA Fire Investigator 1033 Professional Qualifications Standard.
  • Certified or ability to achieve the following certification upon hire.
  • Hazardous Material Awareness and Operations (NFPA 472 or NFPA 1072) IFSAC and/or ProBoard certification
  • Fire Inspector Level I and II (NFPA 1031) IFSAC and/or ProBoard certification
  • Fire Investigator (NFPA 1033) IFSAC and/or ProBoard certification
  • Fire Services Instructor Level I (NFPA 1041) IFSAC and/or ProBoard certification
  • Possession of a valid Saskatchewan Class 5 Driver\xe2\x80\x99s Licence.
  • Current driver\xe2\x80\x99s abstract from SGI demonstrating a safe driving record.




Requires Security Check

Acceptable current Criminal Record Check (CRC) and Vulnerable Sector Search (VSS) upon offer of employment.


Additional Requirements

Shift work and weekend work will be involved.
Must be available to be on-call.
Weekly Hours: 37.5
Salary Range: $72,543.60 to $128,346.48 CAD per annum (2023 rates)
