maintaining and preserving roadways, pads, and access routes
in both summer and winter conditions.
This is
not a production earthworks role
, this position requires an operator who understands how to
maintain crown, preserve gravel, control drainage, and protect road structure
, while working largely independently with minimal supervision.

Key Responsibilities
Road & Site Maintenance (Core Focus)
Maintain gravel roads, access routes, and pads to required standards
Establish and maintain proper
road crown and cross-fall
Preserve gravel coverage and
prevent loss of aggregate into ditches
Shape and maintain ditches for effective drainage without overcutting
Perform fine grading to maintain smooth, durable running surfaces
Identify developing road issues and proactively correct them
Winter Operations
Clear snow and ice while
protecting compacted road structure
Avoid removal of base material and compacted gravel
Maintain safe driving conditions without damaging road integrity
Adapt grading techniques to variable winter conditions
Equipment Operation & Maintenance
Operate motor graders safely and efficiently in all conditions
Conduct thorough
pre-use, post-use, and daily inspections
Maintain cleanliness and operational readiness of equipment
Identify, report, and document mechanical or safety concerns
Safety & Operational Leadership
Actively participate in
hazard assessments, FLHAs, and toolbox talks
Identify hazards and apply appropriate controls
Exercise stop-work authority when conditions are unsafe
Comply with all company, client, and Alberta OH&S requirements
Complete all required safety and operational documentation accurately
Contribute to safety and operational discussions and continuous improvement
Communication & Independence
Work independently with minimal direct supervision
Communicate effectively with supervisors, dispatch, and site contacts
Provide updates on road conditions, issues, and required follow-up work
Represent Al's Contracting professionally on all worksites
Required Qualifications
Proven experience operating motor graders
in road maintenance or heavy civil environments
Strong understanding of:
Road crown and drainage principles
Gravel preservation and surface maintenance
Seasonal road maintenance techniques
Ability to work independently and make sound field decisions
Valid Driver's Licence
with a clean driver's abstract
Valid safety certifications (required):
H2S Alive
Ground Disturbance Level 2
Standard First Aid (CPR)
CSTS 2020
Ability to successfully complete
pre-employment drug & alcohol testing
Comfortable working outdoors in remote locations and all weather conditions
