Financial Controller

Thunder Bay, ON, CA, Canada

Job Description

About Us

We are one of NWO's largest locally owned and operated powersports dealership serving Thunder Bay and surrounding areas. At Intercity Power Sports we are proud to carry New and Used ATV's, SideXSides, outboards, boats, trailers, personal watercraft and many other products, as well as providing automotive repair services that keep critical trades & infrastructure running.

Our team includes gearheads and slednecks, dog lovers, gardeners, and boaters. Some are hunters, some are skiers, and some just like hanging out with their family on the weekends. Some have forty years of experience, some have 2 months. Some went to the fanciest schools or worked for professional teams, both learned on the job and built up deep industry expertise through years of practice.

Regardless of interests or background, our team is committed to each other and to our companies. We share a deep passion for working, playing, and adventuring in NWO beyond where the roads end.

We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Financial Controller to oversee and manage the financial operations for a team of 15. The ideal candidate will be responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, ensuring compliance with relevant regulations, and providing strategic financial insights to support business growth. This role offers an opportunity for a professional with strong leadership skills and a solid background in financial management to contribute significantly to our organisation's success.

Core Responsibilities

Record sales transactions Process and record bank deposits Monitor cash position and flag concerns Complete payroll processing Manage source deductions & HST remittances Corporate tax Full AP cycle: enter, reconcile statements, process payments AR management and customer statement distribution Bank and credit card reconciliations Floor plan statement reconciliation and inventory verification Provide key financial metrics within days of month-end close WSIB remittance T4 preparation and filing Year-end close and working paper preparation

Ongoing Strategic Work:

Data and inventory analysis to inform operational decisions Budget development and variance analysis Financial forecasting and scenario modeling Financial statement preparation and interpretation Support for audit processes Contribution to management team discussions on growth initiatives, hiring decisions, and capital investments

What This Role Requires

You must have demonstrated experience with QuickBooks Online - this is non-negotiable. You will work in the system daily, and we cannot allocate time for platform training.

CPA designation or equivalent experience in a full-cycle accounting role is strongly preferred. We need someone who can handle complexity, ambiguity, and the technical demands of maintaining accurate books while managing regulatory compliance.

You must be capable of working independently. There is no finance team to consult. No corporate infrastructure to rely on. When you have questions about operational processes, you will need to ask them. When you identify issues in the numbers, you will need to investigate and propose solutions.

What We're Screening For

Curiosity

Do you naturally investigate variances rather than just recording them? When margins compress in a service category, do you want to understand the operational driver? We need someone genuinely interested in the business operations, not just the accounting of those operations.

Resilience

Small business finance is unpredictable. Customer payments arrive late. Unexpected warranty claims impact margins. Forecasts require revision. Can you maintain effectiveness and composure when dealing with these inevitable disruptions?

Humility

You may bring significant experience, possibly from larger organizations or different industries. Can you set aside assumptions and invest time learning how a powersports and automotive service business actually operates? Will you ask questions when you need to understand context?

Flexibility

Your work will span from transaction-level data entry to strategic business analysis. Some decisions you'll own completely. Others you'll inform. You need to be energized by this variety rather than frustrated by the lack of specialization.

Authority and Decision-Making

This role carries real authority to commit, not merely authority to approve others' recommendations. We will establish clear dollar thresholds and decision frameworks. Within those boundaries, you will own the decisions and the outcomes.

Your analysis will inform hiring decisions, inventory investments, pricing strategies, and capital expenditure choices. This requires the ability to translate financial data into operational recommendations.

Who Should Not Apply

This role is not appropriate for candidates who:

Require established processes and minimal ambiguity Need consistent daily schedules with predictable demands Expect extensive training periods or gradual responsibility increases

What We Value

We prioritize character over credentials. We care more about your demonstrated ability to own outcomes than your resume pedigree.

If you built your expertise through non-traditional paths - night school while working full-time, progression from entry-level roles through increasing responsibility - that signals something valuable to us. We want people who have proven they can learn, adapt, and take ownership.

We distinguish between responsibility (completing assigned tasks) and accountability (owning decisions and outcomes). This role requires accountability. You will make decisions, implement solutions, and own the results.

Our Commitment

You will receive meaningful responsibility from the beginning. We will provide support and context, but we will not micromanage your work. As you demonstrate capability, we will expand your authority.

You will work directly with company leadership. Your contributions will have immediate, visible impact on business outcomes. You will see the direct connection between your work and company performance.

We think in decades, not fiscal years. If you help us build something sustainable and valuable, you will share in that long-term success.

Intercity Powersports and Intercity Auto Service are equal opportunity employers committed to building a team that reflects the diversity of Northern Ontario.

Ability to commute/relocate:

Thunder Bay, ON P7B 6H2: reliably commute or plan to relocate before starting work (required)
Application question(s):

Describe a time when you identified a financial issue or opportunity that others had missed. What did you notice, and what action did you take? Tell us about a decision you owned completely - where you had full accountability for the outcome. What was the situation, what did you decide, and what resulted? If you have not worked in a small business environment, explain specifically why you believe you would be effective in an environment with limited infrastructure, frequent interruptions, and high ambiguity.
