Primary function

The Finance Policy Advisor provides senior level support in the review, development and implementation of LAO's financial management policy framework. This role is situated in LAO's finance department.

Legal Aid Ontario operates within Hybrid work environment meaning this role would require the successful candidate to have a blended work schedule of in office and remote work.

Reporting to: Manager, Strategic Sourcing and Financial Management Policy

Classification: SPG2 ($79,184-$102,979)

Key accountabilities

  • Leads financial management policy reviews, revamps, training, and communication including strategies to ensure policy maintenance and adherence.
  • Leads or participates on cross functional project teams to develop and implement regulatory finance management policy initiatives
  • Conducts financial management policy research activities by analyzing and reviewing appropriate data sources including legislation, regulations and other directives or policies to develop policy proposals, discussion papers, legislation and draft/revise policies
  • Establishes and maintains a network of ongoing contacts with key stakeholders in other agencies/ministries to deal with accounting policy and standards related issues.
  • Develops and maintains relationships with a variety of internal and external stakeholders
  • Provides information and advice to staff, senior management and industry stakeholders on LAO financial management policy.
  • Prepares and presents a range of materials (e.g. briefing material, position papers) to senior decision makers
  • Keeps on top of changing legislation/regulations/directives
Required skills & experience
  • Undergraduate degree in business, economics, or quantitative discipline
  • Demonstrated knowledge of financial and accounting theories, principles and practices for public sector organizations, to lead the development and implementation of the finance management policy framework
  • 3 to 5 years in a financial and quantitative analysis environment in an intermediate or large organization
  • Expertise in project management principles and methodologies to manage the delivery of program plans, initiatives and goals.
  • Experience in financial management policy analysis, planning and development.
  • Analytical and problem solving skills to produce findings and recommendations for finance management policy updates/alternatives
  • Expertise in interpreting and applying knowledge of regulations/legislation/directives to provide financial management policy advice
