Background:
The Nkabom Collaborative is a Community of Practice addressing youth unemployment in Ghana's nutrition and agri-food sectors through experiential learning, inclusive community-based research, and youth-led entrepreneurship. This innovative partnership brings together nine leading Ghanaian and Canadian institutions to transform the nutrition-agri-food ecosystem and create dignified employment opportunities for young people, especially women and marginalized communities in Ghana.
Together, the Secretariat team (6-8 people in total) will serve as a facilitating hub for activity across all partner institutions (PI). The Secretariat will likewise promote and reflect the shared Principles of Collaboration adopted by the Partner organizations in support of Collaborative programming and deliverables and in the day-to-day operations of the Secretariat in support of the Collaborative.
Position Summary:
Reporting to the Associate Director, Finance and Reporting, the Finance Officer provides support, oversight and guidance for fund administration across academic units at McGill and Ghana-based sub-partners for all funds and financial activities pertaining to the Secretariat to the Nutrition and Sustainable Agri-food Collaborative (Nkabom), develops best practices and business processes to maximize compliance with internal and external policies and regulations as well as with reporting and document retention requirements.
Primary Responsibilities:

  • Oversees, and finalizes quarterly disbursements of donor funds to all partners of the Collaborative based at McGill and in Ghana, ensures disbursement agreements are prepared and signed.
  • Produces quarterly submission of financial reports and supporting documents with the Finance Teams of partner institutions and McGill partners to the Secretariat of the Collaborative
  • Ensures accurate and compliant retention of all financial backup documentation from partner institutions in Ghana and McGill Partners.
  • Evaluates expenses and financial processes of the Secretariat and McGill Partners with McGill Financial Policies and Guidelines; follows up on timely reconciliation of travel advances and procurement cards (if applicable) within each financial reporting period
  • Compiles information and prepares draft of quarterly consolidated financial report for review by the Associate Director, Finance and Reporting; schedules and plans activities ahead of time to meet donor deadlines, follows up and collaborates with finance teams of Ghanaian Partner Institutions.
  • Provides direct support and guidance to Fund Financial Managers of the Nkabom Collaborative at McGill University and their teams in fund management and financial transactions.
  • Participates in developing standard operating procedures and organizing training sessions for Finance teams of all partners and teams of the Collaborative.
  • Suggests and participates in implementation of best financial practices across all partner institutions.
  • Oversees and processes financial transactions as needed, such as journals to transfer annual budgets to McGill Partners and McGill Market place contract and new supplier requests, receipts and invoice payments.
  • Supervises support staff if applicable.

  • Extensive knowledge of accounting and financial management.
  • Service-oriented with excellent customer service skills and the ability to establish productive working relationships quickly.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and interact with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability creating comprehensive financial statements; preparing reports for financial auditors; working with complex formulas and creating detailed professional reports.
  • Proficiency with computerized applications including excel, databases, word processing software, Banner FIS, and Crystal reports.
  • Superior analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Proven organizational skills with ability to multi-task, prioritize and meet deadlines.
  • Proven ability to work autonomously and as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills in both English and French.
