Job Description

The Nogojiwanong Friendship Centre (NFC) is a not-for-profit, culture and community-based organization mandated to serve the needs of urban Indigenous people in the City of Peterborough and surrounding area. The NFC is currently accepting applications for a full-time position as our Finance Controller.

Objectives:



To manage NFC's financial operations by maintaining accurate accounting records, ensuring compliance with policies, agreements, and legislation, and supporting fiscal integrity and long-term sustainability of the organization.

Responsibilities:



Perform day-to-day accounting functions, including accounts payable, payroll, journal entries, bank reconciliations, HST and WSIB filing, and government remittances (CPP, EI, EHT, etc.). Record and monitor all receivables such as invoices, grants, and reimbursements, ensuring timely collection. Process employee expense claims, reimbursements, and invoices in accordance with NFC policies. Prepare T4 slips, Records of Employment and ensure accurate and timely payroll remittance. Reconcile all bank accounts and subledger accounts monthly and submit for approval. Maintain complete, current, and accurate financial files and documentation. Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements (Statements of Operations, Financial Position, and related reports) in accordance with government regulations and Board/management requirements. Support the Executive Director and Board of Directors with accurate, timely financial information for decision making. Conduct variance analysis on budgets and provide insights to strengthen efficiency and financial health. Prepare and submit financial reports for the Executive Director, in compliance with agreements. Assist in the development of organizational and program-specific budgets, in collaboration with the Executive Director. Monitor budget performance and provide budget to actual analysis; make recommend adjustments as needed. Ensure adherence to GAAP, relevant non-profit standards, NFC financial policies, and internal control measures to safeguard assets. Advise management on and develop internal controls to safeguard assets. Monitor for irregularities or potential financial mismanagement; reporting directly to the Executive Director or Finance Committee. Prepare financial records and continuity schedules for annual audits and other financial documentation. Maintain investment and asset inventories that support the audit. Assist and participate in annual audits and monitoring processes. Build and maintain positive working relationships with funders, auditors, and financial institutions. Ensure compliance with CRA rules, including preparation of T3010. Maintain charitable tax receipt records and prepare returns in compliance with the Income Tax Act. Provide financial analysis and projections to support organizational planning and decision-making. Contribute to financial planning and long-term financial sustainability. Support long-term planning initiatives with the Executive Director and Board. Assist in the implementation and maintenance of accounting software.

Qualifications:



Bachelor's degree or diploma in accounting, finance, commerce, or related field. Degree/diploma courses should cover key accounting/finance subject areas: financial reporting, audit and assurance, management accounting, taxation, etc. Minimum 2 -3 years of progressive experience in accounting or financial management, preferably in the non-profit sector. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered. Some knowledge and awareness of Indigenous culture and history. Proficiency in accounting systems (e.g., Sage 300 or similar). Knowledge of CRA rules regarding charities / non-profits, government remittances, etc. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills. Excellent attention to detail, accuracy, and ability to meet deadlines. Strong communication and interpersonal skills with ability to work collaboratively. Knowledge of GAAP and relevant financial legislation. Ability to balance operational tasks with strategic financial planning. Satisfactory vulnerable sector check.

Salary:

$56,100.00 - $66,000.00 (with a 3-month probation)

Schedule:

8:30 - 4:30 Monday to Friday with evenings and weekends as needed
