Fiber Optic Trainee Assistant POSITION INFORMATION Job title Fiber Optic Trainee Assistant\xe2\x80\x93 OSP Division Reports to Telecommunications Lead Tech/Project Manager Location Main Office, 607 Front Street Nelson, BC V1L 4B6 Hours of Work Full Time Job Summary As a successful Fiber Optic trainee, you will be exposed to a wide spectrum of tasks within the Fiber Optic industry. You will learn and assist with full scope construction including aerial placement, underground placement, documentation, excavation, troubleshooting, inside terminal installation, testing, installation of underground vaults, installation of splice closures, installation of internal cabling, copper cabling, telephone company standards and related. Equipment used could include bucket trucks, reel trailers, mini excavators, OTDR and loss test equipment, fiber optic termination tools, directional drills, shovels, and related. You will be required to competently operate special purpose-built equipment unique to the work. You will learn to be well versed with national telecommunication carrier standards of practice from both an installation and safety point of view.   • Work under direct supervision of DHC personnel to assist with construction of fiber optic networks
  • Turning in accurate documentation at completion of assignments
  • Record your time accurately and per job/task using smart phone based software
  • Read understand, interpret, input, and analyze data assignments given to you
  • Operate technical equipment, including but not limited to computer, OTDR and fusion splicing equipment for single and ribbon fiber
  • Clean and maintain supplies, tools, equipment, and work areas to ensure compliance with safety regulations
  • Lift and manipulate splice enclosures and other plant and equipment
  • Comfortably work in cramped and/or enclosed spaced for extended periods of time
  • Work aloft, either from a ladder or aerial lift device
  • Must be willing to follow all company and/or contractor safety policies and procedures.
  • Load and unload equipment and cable trailers
  • Work in all weather conditions, confined spaces, isolation, and in varied building configurations.
  • Ability to work construction in a physically demanding atmosphere including, but not limited to: carry, raise and climb a ladder, carry, lift and handle heavy equipment (manhole covers, cable reels)
  • Document network by labelling cables, termination enclosures and recording as built diagrams.
Qualifications and Experience
  • A keen interest in telecommunications and the work performed by DHC
  • Previous construction, technology, or civil experience is desired but not necessary.
  • Ability to operate and understand hand tools
  • Ability to communicate clearly and understand direction given
  • Valid Driver\xe2\x80\x99s License
  • Criminal Record Check
Working Conditions.
  • Physically demanding workload

  • Ability to work all days and hours
  • Ability to work in extreme temperatures indoor and outdoor
  • Must be willing to complete administrative tasks in a timely and accurate manner, including submission of photographs and as-built details
  • You must have a smart phone capable of taking and uploading photos
  • Overtime and after hours
  • Scheduled rotation as an on-call resource for emergency maintenance work.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to complete elevated work with extended reach.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and carry items including up a flight of stairs.
  • Ability to knee/crouch for 5 minute durations.
  • Ability to climb and use safely scaffolds, lifts and ladders
  • Ability to work in confined spaces
  • Ability to do fine, precise work with hands
  • Strong manual dexterity, hand-eye coordination, and attention to detail
Remuneration
  • $18-$28 p/hr
