Position Summary
Cascadia Seaweed is looking for a Farm Operations Lead to support our innovative seaweed farming operations. This role combines physical, outdoor work with leadership and problem-solving, making it ideal for someone with transferable skills from the construction or marine industries.
Reporting to the Farm Manager, the Farm Operations Lead will be responsible for executing and improving daily farm operations. We are seeking someone who can take initiative, work independently after training, and contribute fresh ideas to optimize our methods
The Farm Operations Lead will provide essential support to the Farm Manager in the day-to-day operations of Cascadia's seaweed farming, harvesting, and post processing activities. This role involves hands-on work in the field, assisting with equipment maintenance, farm construction, and the cultivation of seaweed. This position will work up to 50% on the water with the balance of time at upland facilities.
Responsibilities
Assist in the daily operations of seaweed farming, including planting, monitoring, and harvesting seaweed.
Help maintain and repair aquaculture equipment, ensuring all tools, machinery, and materials are well maintained and in good working order.
Aid in the construction and maintenance of farm infrastructure, including the installation and upkeep of farming structures and equipment.
Transport farm equipment and materials to and from storage locations using company vehicles, ensuring all items are managed safely and efficiently.
Adhere to all health and safety protocols, actively contributing to a safe working environment and following Cascadia's best practices.
Work closely with the Farm Manager and other team members to support farm operations and contribute to problem-solving and improvements.
Assist with the monitoring of seaweed growth and health, reporting any issues or concerns to the Farm Manager.
Provide logistical support for farm activities, including the preparation of equipment and materials needed for various tasks.
Perform additional tasks as assigned by the Farm Manager, including general farm maintenance and operational support.
Hands on seaweed cultivation.
Schedule
Work hours will be flexible and based on operational needs with a standard work week of 40 hours per week. This includes working some evenings and/or weekends.
The nature of the position requires travel and long days when in the field and will periodically require you to work in excess of a standard 40-hour work week.
Requirements
Valid driver's license (required).
Small Vessel Operator Proficiency (SVOP) certification or willingness to obtain (preferred).
Familiarity with safety standards such as WHMIS and first-aid risk assessments (preferred).
Physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds and work outdoors in varied conditions.
Previous experience in commercial fishing, marine farming, or similar manual labor on boats is highly preferred.
Experience with machinery and equipment such as forklifts, hiab cranes, etc. is an asset.
Basic computer skills and familiarity with Microsoft Office, google docs is an asset.
Must be able to perform duties in a wide range of environments, from indoor facilities to outdoors in the ocean.
