Job Summary
The Farm Manager is responsible for overseeing the daily operations, planning, and development of the community farm. This role supports food sovereignty, traditional food practices, and sustainable agriculture. The Farm Manager ensures the farm is a productive, educational, and culturally significant resource for the community.
Key Responsibilities:
Plan, coordinate, and manage crop production, harvesting, and storage to meet community needs.
Incorporate traditional knowledge, practices, and teachings into farming operations where appropriate.
Supervise and mentor farm staff, volunteers, and youth workers.
Maintain farm equipment, tools, and infrastructure to ensure safe and efficient operations.
Develop and implement planting schedules; monitor soil health and apply sustainable land management practices.
Collaborate with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and community members to integrate cultural teachings and community priorities.
Manage farm budgets, purchase supplies, track production and operational expenses.
Organize and lead community engagement activities such as workshops, harvest celebrations, and educational programs.
Qualifications
Experience in farming, horticulture, or agriculture (minimum 3-5 years preferred).
Knowledge of and respect for Indigenous food systems, cultural practices, and traditional ecological knowledge.
Strong leadership and supervisory skills; experience managing teams or community programs.
Ability to develop and manage budgets and operational plans.
Familiarity with sustainable agriculture, organic practices, and land stewardship.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work collaboratively with community members, including Elders and youth.
Physically able to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
Valid driver's license.
CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain) is considered an asset.
Post-secondary education in agriculture, environmental studies, or a related field is an asset but not required if balanced by relevant experience.
Working Conditions:
Full-time, seasonal or year-round position (depending on community needs and climate).
Primarily outdoor work; exposure to varying weather conditions (heat, rain, cold).
May require early mornings, evenings, and occasional weekends during peak growing and harvest seasons.
Moderate to heavy physical activity including lifting, bending, and manual labor.
Office-based work required for planning, budgeting, and coordination.
Travel within the community and surrounding areas may be required for outreach or engagement.
Supportive and collaborative work environment rooted in community values and cultural respect.
Hours of Work
Your regular hours of work will be from 8:00am - 4:00pm for 7 hours per day from Monday to Friday and it is expected that all work will be completed within your regular working hours, however, you may be required from time to time to work outside your normal hours of work.
