Emily Murphy Non-Profit Housing Corporation (EM) is a Rent-Geared-to-Income (RGI), social housing provider, with 38 stacked town homes exclusively for single parents and their dependents.
We are a supportive housing community, offering an array of social supports including, but not limited to, programs for children and youth, collective kitchens, referrals, crisis intervention, informal counselling and various other community development initiatives.
At this time, we are seeking a permanent Family Support Worker. Interviews will be held as applications are received. This position may be filled prior to the application deadline. Only selected candidates will be contacted for an interview.
General Overview of Family Support Worker responsibilities:
Establish and maintain professional and trusting relationships with tenants and outreach to tenants regarding upcoming events and opportunities for community involvement.
Establish and maintain professional and trusting relationships with community members and other agencies.
Plan, coordinate and facilitate office-run programming for children and adults, including after-school groups, summer break programming, life skill development programs, workshops, and more.
Maintain confidentiality and boundaries as set out in the Confidentiality Policy.
Respond to crises and facilitate short-term counselling for tenants, as required.
Have a good knowledge of referral sources in the community and support tenants in accessing these services.
Provide advocacy to support tenants in accessing services and meeting needs, as required.
Promote conflict resolution and problem-solving strategies when mediating tenant matters.
Facilitate intake sessions, in coordination with the Executive Director, for new tenants.
Participate in community outreach initiatives to promote and encourage tenant engagement and community cohesion.
Participate in day-to-day activities that work to meet the needs of tenants requiring support.
Perform other general staff duties, including filing, cleaning, grocery shopping, etc.
Specific tasks include, but are not limited to:
Plan and facilitate consistent programming for children and adults (i.e. children's groups, Homework Club, Collective Kitchen, Lunch & Learns, Mommy & Me Playgroups, seasonal activities, sports and recreational opportunities).
Develop and implement new programming and activities that meet the needs of the tenants and their families, and community-wide needs.
Case management, including producing clear, detailed client case notes in a timely manner.
Facilitate in-home support for designated families with identified needs.
Participate in the development and distribution of monthly program calendars and community memos.
Track and maintain program statistics and program budget/expenses using Microsoft suite.
Share responsibility of sitting on varying community committees to advocate for the needs of tenants.
Job Qualifications:
Post-secondary education should reflect the nature of work at EM (i.e. Child and Youth Care Practitioner (CYC), Social Service Worker (SSW))
Understanding of the challenges/barriers faced by young single parents and their children living in social housing
Understanding of community development strategies
Understanding of therapeutic techniques to engage children and youth participants in group settings
Applicants must provide a valid Vulnerable Sector check, First Aid and CPR level C certificate.
Valid driver's license and access to a vehicle is highly preferable
Bilingual an asset
