The staff of the Kingston Youth Shelter and Transition Homes maintain a clean, safe, and supportive environment. The Family Mediation Worker is a neutral person who helps youth resolve the conflict within their home environment with the overall goal of the youth avoiding homelessness. This could be with immediate family or a supportive family environment or independently, whichever is the most secure for the youth. The Family Mediation Worker does not make decisions for the youth or their family, rather help facilitate discussion and guide the parties toward a mutually acceptable arrangement. The Family Mediation Worker also provides public education in the form of presentations and workshops to families and youth. The Family Mediation Worker maintains and fosters relationships with the local schools, school boards and other agencies to promote the services provided.
Time Commitment & Remuneration
The Family Mediation Worker position consists of a 40-hours per week. Scheduling flexibility including weekends and evenings is required to meet the demands of the position. Wages and benefits are as per the Collective Agreement. This is a unionized position.
Major Responsibilities
? Facilitate negotiation and conflict resolution through dialogue
? Offer short term support and advocacy to families to follow through with the options they choose
? Role-model appropriate behaviour and communication
? Provide information to families about additional services available to them through other community agencies, making referrals as necessary
? Provide public education to community members and/or high schools around prevention and conflict resolution in the home
? Keep clear and concise written documentation
? Prepare monthly statistics and outcome reports
? Complete follow-up after 3 and 6 months to monitor status of family and youth
? Provide updates to the Manager of Youth Services of any developments, concerns or problems
? Perform all requested tasks by the Manager of Youth Services or designate
Minimum Requirements
? Strong counselling skills
? Degree or Diploma in a Social Services or related field as approved by the Manager of Youth Services and Executive Director
? Advanced training in Mediation and or Alternative Dispute Resolution
? Current First Aid/CPR
? Minimum of 2 years experience
? Current CPIC with Vulnerable Sector
? Proof of COVID Vaccination
? This position is required to provide their own transportation for meetings and between separate sites in the KFL&A area for which reimbursement is provided
